Près de la gare du Nord, un inconnu a été blessé par des tueurs en automobile. Quand la police survient, la victime a disparu. Le commissaire Maigret, assisté de l'inspecteur Lognon, découvre qu'il s'agit de gangsters américains. La plaque minéralogique de la voiture des agresseurs, relevée par un témoin, conduit Lognon à un bar, tenu par un Américain d'origine sicilienne, où travaille une Belge : Lily, qui a hébergé les gangsters.
