The story is told out of order, in flashbacks and mostly short scenes. Kevin Khatchadourian (Ezra Miller) is in prison after committing a massacre at his high school. His mother, Eva (Swinton), a once-successful travel writer, lives alone in a run-down house and works in a mall travel agency in a town near the prison, where she visits Kevin. She looks back at her memories of him growing up as she tries to cope with the anger and hostility of her neighbors, who know she is Kevin's mother. Her memories are shown in flashbacks.

The plot centres around moody 17-year-old Mathilde (Paradis) who lived separated from her parents. Her philosophy teacher François (Cremer), happens to stumble across her path and is eager to help her learn more. He starts to come over to her house everyday going over her homework, and teaching her the art of the study. Eventually, Mathilde starts placing little hints that she finds the 47-year-old François attractive. He tries to resist her, but he finds himself falling for her as well. They soon blossom into a passionate love, but they must keep their affair a secret from his wife (Mikaël) and the school. Later François's wife finds out about the affair because her husband comes home late and Mathilde calls his house until he answers.

Mika passe ses vacances d'été au haras de Kaltenbach chez sa grand-mère. Il est proche de la faillite à cause de la concurrence d'un autre centre équestre : L'installation moderne menace d'attirer progressivement tous les apprentis cavaliers. The film is set against the strict social hierarchy of an American public high school. Working class misfits Keith Nelson (Eric Stoltz) and the defensively tomboyish Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) are good friends. But when Keith asks out the most popular girl in school, Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), Watts realizes her feelings for him are much deeper. Meanwhile, Hardy Jenns (Craig Sheffer), Amanda's Corvette-driving spoiled ex-boyfriend from the rich end of town, plots trouble for Keith by inviting him and Amanda to a party after the date. Elsewhere, Amanda is cut dead by her friends. Keith finds out about the plot, believing Amanda to be party to it, but goes ahead with the date anyway, spending money saved for college and roping in Watts (as chauffeur) to help make the date special. At Jenns's party, the timely arrival of other "misfits" saves Keith from being beaten up. Keith tells Jenns he is "over" and Amanda slaps Jenns's face. In the end, Amanda decides that she needs to learn to stand on her own. Keith catches up to Watts and they kiss and walk on together.
