A recently promoted police inspector (Gian Maria Volonté) kills his mistress (Florinda Bolkan), and then covers up his involvement in the crime. He insinuates himself into the investigation, planting clues to steer his subordinate officers toward a series of other suspects, including the woman's gay husband and a student radical. He then exonerates the other suspects and leads the investigators toward him, in order to prove that he is "above suspicion" and can get away with anything, even while being investigated. In the end, he confesses to the crime in front of his superiors - who refuse to believe him. Sure that he is safe, he recants his confession, and receives the approval of the police commissioner.

The film documents the events that saw a French Captain, Alfred Dreyfus, sent to Devil's Island for espionage near the end of the nineteenth century. Colonel Georges Picquart (Richard Dreyfuss) is given the job of justifying Dreyfus' sentence. Instead, he discovers that Dreyfus (Kenneth Colley), a Jew, was merely a convenient scapegoat for the actions of the true culprit, a member of the French General staff. His attempt to right the wrong sees his military career ended and the famous French author, Émile Zola (Martin Friend), found guilty of libel.

Early morning in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, some young village girls meet in the woods with a Barbadian slave named Tituba (Charlayne Woodard). Au début du XIX siècle, à Marseille, Edmond Dantès est victime d'un complot ourdi par trois individus jaloux de son ascension sociale : le magistrat Henri de Villefort, l'officier Fernand de Mortcerf et l'envieux marin Caderousse le dénoncent comme étant bonapartiste. Edmond Dantès est arrêté et condamné à être incarcéré dans la prison de l'île du Château d'If. Villefort devient procureur, Mortcerf se marie avec Mercédès dont il a brisé ses fiançailles avec Dantès tandis que Caderousse, qui ne supportait pas de voir Dantès être prochainement promu capitaine de vaisseau, s'établit comme aubergiste. Au bout de dix-sept ans, Dantès parvient à communiquer avec l'abbé Faria, prisonnier d'une cellule voisine. Celui-ci lui apprend qu'un formidable trésor est caché dans l'île de Monte-Cristo. Les deux prisonniers décident de s'évader grâce à un ingénieux, mais risqué stratagème au cours duquel l'abbé Faria trouve la mort. Edmond Dantès parvient jusqu'à l'île de Monte-Cristo et, devenu immensément riche, fait son apparition dans la grande bourgeoisie parisienne sous le nom de comte de Monte-Cristo. Rien ne l'arrête, désormais, pour assouvir sa froide et implacable vengeance.

Edmond Dantès is falsely accused of Bonapartism and sentenced to spend the rest of his life imprisoned in the dreaded Château d'If, an island fortress from which no prisoner has ever escaped, and to which the most dangerous political prisoners are sent.
