The Mandrake (Italian: La Mandragola; also called Mandragola: The Love Root) is a 1965 Franco-Italian co-production directed by Alberto Lattuada and based on the eponymous 16th-century play by Italian author Niccolò Machiavelli. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Costume Design.
Synopsis
The young student Ligurio returns to Florence from Paris after a long period of study. He did not just set foot in the Renaissance town falls in love with the beautiful Lucrezia, a noble woman already married to a wealthy city official: the rude, ignorant and pompous Nicias. Together with a pimp and his inept servant, Ligurio tries to conquer it, but in vain. The woman proves too chaste and faithful, yet Ligurio feels that the woman is not as it appears. After a failed attempt to seduce Lucretia in a bath in the hot springs of Florence, Ligurio has the opportunity to realize the situation of the city. Everything has changed significantly: the pilgrims now lend ear to the mocker friar Girolamo Savonarola, while the Medici who govern the city always seem to be the most corrupt, together with members of the Borgia. The ruffian, who became a friend of Ligurio advised him to investigate better about the married life of Lucrezia. The film is based on a play by the famous Neapolitan writer Eduardo Scarpetta, father of Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. The story is set in Naples and Sorrento in the second half of 1800. The thief Felice Sciosciammocca (the surname in Naples means "one who is always with her mouth open in astonishment"; Felice means "Happy") together with the bandit Faina ("Weasel") escapes from prison and meets with a eunuch Turkish that he should go to Sorrento for a service. Don Felice kidnaps him and steals his letter of recommendation to get into the house of the rich man who had been sent the Turkish, so that gains a bit 'of money for him and for his accomplice. The man who had called the Turkish is the rich grocer Don Pasquale, being jealous of his wife and young daughter, betrothed to Don Carluccio holding a dowry, is to host the Don Felice robes Turkish and immediately test some suspicion. Un château dans une île de Suède. The story is taken from the Eduardo Scarpetta's play: Naples, 1800. The poor Felice Sciosciamocca tries to work being a scribe for ignorant people, while his friend Don Pasquale tries to make photographs for rich couples. Meanwhile in the house where the two live, their wives start to fight because the apartment is mortgaged, and the women don't have money to pay the rent. Luckily rich Count Luigino, in love with the beautiful dancer Gemma, asks Pasquale and Felice to stage a farce for him. In fact the parents of Gemma want to meet Luigino's family, but he knows that his real father does not approve his love affair with the dancer. So Luigino transforms Don Felice Sciosciamocca into his uncle: Prince of Casadores, and Don Pasquale has to play the true father of Luigino. The young count entrusts a false part to play to all members of the two families, except the second wife of Felice: Concetta. Unfortunately Count Luigino cannot find a role for her, and Concetta gets very angry. While Felice Sciosciammocca and Pasquale're argue in the beautiful villa of Don Gaetano, Gemma's father, Concetta bursts in the home, and tries to compromise the plan organized by Luigino. Fortunately Don Felice manages to fix the situation and in the end, all is happily resolved.

Don Felice Sciosciammocca becomes mayor of the town of Roccasecca. In 1945, as a truckload of war survivors stops in front of an Amsterdam factory at the end of World War II, Otto Frank (Joseph Schildkraut) gets out and walks inside. After climbing the stairs to a deserted garret, Otto finds a girl's discarded glove and sobs, then is joined and comforted by Miep Gies (Dodie Heath) and Mr. Kraler (Douglas Spencer), factory workers who shielded him from the Nazis. A marble Greek bas relief explodes to reveal black men dancing the samba to drums in a favela. Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) arrives in Rio de Janeiro, and takes a trolley driven by Orfeu (Breno Mello).
