Synopsis
Le grand-père Jéricho invite ses petits-enfants, le jeune couple Marie et Jacques, à passer quelques semaines de vacances avec lui dans sa maison provençale de Lourmarin. Il n'est pas dupe de l'image de bonheur que le couple lui joue, car Marie et Jacques sont séparés, Jacques partage désormais son existence avec Agathe, un mannequin. Le grand-père, en ravivant les souvenirs d'enfance du couple qui s'est formé par le passé à Lourmarin, va ranimer leur amour.Actors

En 1944, à Marseille, Denis, un adolescent de 14 ans, termine sa classe de 3e dans un collège de Jésuites. Sur la côte marseillaise, une petite tribu a ses habitudes au cabaret de Joséfa, le « Perroquet Bleu » qui périclite faute de clients. Les copains marginaux ou en perdition sociale se rassemblent au bar : il y a Jaco, chômeur et malheureux en ménage, Patrick, un autre chômeur marié avec Marie-Sol, femme de ménage qui ne tarde pas à rejoindre leur clan après avoir refusé les avances de son patron et enfin Otto, un ancien légionnaire. Les difficultés ne continuent pas moins de s’accroître : la femme et les enfants de Jaco le quittent, la situation financière s'aggrave pour tous, le cabaret menace faillite et enfin, le drame : Patrick se suicide pour que sa famille puisse toucher l'assurance-vie.

Jacques Mazel, the son of a wealthy merchant, and Patricia Amoretti, daughter of a well-digger, live in a small village in the Provence region of France while Europe is at the brink of World War I. She has just turned 18 and is smitten with the handsome Jacques when he carries her across a stream to bring lunch to her father who is digging a well. After their second encounter Jacques, a French Air Force pilot, is unexpectedly reassigned. He must leave immediately to replace a pilot who recently broke his leg. Because he cannot meet Patricia as planned the next morning, he leaves an explanatory letter for her but his overly protective mother burns the letter. Patricia concludes Jacques rejected her because they come from different social classes. Later, Patricia discovers that Jacques has left her with child. The parents of Jacques reject the idea that their son conceived a child out of wedlock and refuse to acknowledge the baby. Her father, who had idolized her, sends Patricia to live with his sister in another village to spare his four other daughters from learning of the illegitimate child. Patricia declines an offer of marriage from her father's friend, Félipe, partly because her younger sister, Amanda, has a crush on him. Eventually, Jacques, who was thought to have been shot down by the Germans, returns from a POW camp and learns he has a son.

Judy (Swanson) and Nicholas Randall (Olivier) are a newly married couple who agree to a marriage based on "perfect understanding." This agreement is meant to rule out any form of jealousy. During their honeymoon they are called away to Cannes to spend time with their friends. Judy chooses to go back to London to decorate their home but insists that Nicholas spend time with their friends. While in Cannes, Nicholas becomes drunk and ends up sleeping with Stephanie (Swinburne), his former mistress. Nicholas is guilt-stricken and immediately returns home and confesses to Judy his sin. Judy forgives him due to their prior agreement of a perfect understanding. However, while Nicholas is away on business she confesses to her friend Ivan (Halliday) that she is still upset with Nicholas. Ivan then declare his love for Judy and tells her that if she would like, he would be willing to spend the night with her. Judy leaves Ivan to consider her options and ends up wandering the streets at night. Meanwhile, Nicholas has been outside Ivan's apartment and does not realize that Judy has left. He concludes that the two are having an affair. When Judy returns from walking the streets she leaves a letter for Ivan, thanking him for his love.
