Synopsis
Anne Silver, a Belgian filmmaker, is travelling through West Germany, Belgium, and France to promote her new film. Along the way, she meets with strangers, friends, former lovers, and family members, all the while traversing an isolating and increasingly homogeneous Western Europe.Actors

Une réalisatrice de trente ans, Anna Silver, est accueillie à Essen en Allemagne pour présenter son dernier film au cinéma le Roxy. Elle termine la soirée dans sa chambre d'hôtel avec l'instituteur qui anime le ciné-club qui l'a invitée. Brusquement, elle lui demande de partir. Elle accepte néanmoins de le revoir chez lui le lendemain. Après cette triste visite, elle prend le chemin du retour. Elle profite d'un changement de train à Cologne pour retrouver une amie de sa mère qui est aussi la mère de son ex-petit ami. Elle converse avec un voyageur pendant le trajet vers Bruxelles. Le train fait une halte en gare de Louvain. La réalisatrice a rendez-vous avec sa mère à la gare de Bruxelles-Midi. Elles boivent un verre à la cafétéria avant de louer une chambre dans un hôtel du quartier. Le lendemain, elle reprend le train pour Paris où son compagnon l'attend.

Jeanne Dielman examines a single mother's regimented schedule of cooking, cleaning and mothering over three days. The mother, Jeanne Dielman (whose name is only derived from the title and from a letter she reads to her son), prostitutes herself to a male client daily for her and her son's subsistence. Like her other activities, Jeanne's prostitution is part of the routine she performs every day by rote and is uneventful. But on the second day, Jeanne's routine begins to unravel subtly, as she drops a newly washed spoon and overcooks the potatoes that she's preparing for dinner. These alterations to Jeanne's existence prepare for the climax on the third day.

Seconde Guerre mondiale. Agnese, lavandière originaire de Comacchio (province de Ferrare), est l'épouse d'un résistant. The film is a 20th-century adaptation of Voltaire's 1759 social satire novel Candide, ou l’Optimisme. Set in the World War II-era, it follows the adventures of Candide, an orphaned Westphalian brought up in a baron's chalet. He falls in love with the baron's daughter, Cunégonde, and is thrown out of the house when the baron discovers them kissing. When war breaks out in 1939, Candide is drafted and then captured by the Nazis, but escapes and joins the International Red Cross. Candide's improbable adventures take him into a concentration camp to rescue his tutor, Pangloss; then he is off to South America (where he endures a series of revolutions), Borneo (where he is imprisoned by a primitive tribe), Moscow (where he accidentally foments a missile crisis between the Soviet Union and the United States), and New York (where he gets mixed up in a racial clash). Finally, back in France, he retires to a country house with Cunégonde, Pangloss, and a mysterious lady who saved him from a firing squad, and settles down to write his memoirs.

Atteint d'un cancer du poumon, un officier de la marine nationale française se voit confier un ultime commandement après l'avoir expressément réclamé, celui de l'escorteur d'escadre Jauréguiberry dont c'est également la dernière mission avant son désarmement. Il est chargé de l'assistance et de la surveillance de la grande pêche sur les bancs de Terre-Neuve. Le commandant mène aussi une quête personnelle, enracinée dans les guerres coloniales françaises depuis un évènement sur le Mékong en 1948 : croiser une dernière fois un homme qu'il a connu, devenu patron d'un chalutier. Le déroulement du film révèle qu'il avait donné sa parole à cet homme, parole qu'il n'avait pas pu tenir en raison de divers événements politiques. On peut supposer que, durant toute sa vie qui maintenant s'achève, il a souffert de ce manquement.
