Synopsis
Léon Delmont quitte son domicile parisien où il vit avec son épouse Henriette et ses quatre enfants. Il prend le train en troisième classe avec l'intention de rejoindre sa maîtresse Cécile à Rome, là où il l'a rencontrée. Il s'interroge tout le long du trajet sur sa vie amoureuse.Actors

Rémi (Patrick Dewaere) is a struggling pianist with a wife named Martine (Nicole Garcia), a model who is getting too old to find desirable work, and a 14-year-old stepdaughter Marion (Ariel Besse). When Martine is killed in a car crash, Marion expresses her desire to stay with Rémi in their apartment, but is taken away by her father Charly (Maurice Ronet), an alcoholic who dislikes Rémi. Marion comes back, much to her father's disapproval, and takes up babysitting to help make ends meet while Rémi gives piano lessons. Soon, Marion tells Rémi she is physically attracted to him, but he resists her advances because of her young age.

Sur un territoire lointain, refusant le modèle consumériste et capitaliste, plusieurs dizaines de personnes s'établissent en communauté, en plein milieu naturel. In a town in the French Alps during the Occupation, Barny (Riva) is a young, wayward, sexually frustrated widow, living with her little girl. She is also a communist militant who long ago decided that the easiest way was the best. One day she enters a church, randomly chooses a priest (Belmondo) to confess to and, while in confessional, attempts to provoke him by criticizing Catholicism. Instead of being affronted, the priest engages her in an intellectual discussion regarding religion. The priest is Leon Morin, young, handsome, smart and altruistic. He invites Barny to continue the conversation outside of confessional. She begins regularly seeing him and is impressed by his moral strength, while he makes it his mission to steer her onto the right path.

In 1958 the Merlin law made brothels illegal in Italy. Adua, Lolita, Marilina and Millie are four prostitutes whose brothel in Rome is shut down. Under Adua's leadership, they pool their savings, 500,000 lire apiece, to open a restaurant on the outskirts of Rome. They buy a run-down building, and hire workmen to fix it up, but when they apply to open the restaurant, their permit is rejected because of their history of prostitution. One of Adua's former customers, Ercoli, agrees to buy the building, use his connections, and get the permit in his name, but he expects them to run the restaurant as a front and work as a brothel on the upper floors, in return for a rent of 1 million lire a month.
