The Pirate is a 1973 Hong Kong action martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh, Pao Huseh-li and Wu Ma. The film is based on the life of 19th century pirate Cheung Po Tsai, whom is portrayed by Ti Lung.
Synopsis
Pirate Cheung Po Tsai sales to a shoreline southern China disguised as a rich trader. There, the villagers live in poverty due to struggle against exploitation and corruption by the government. There he attracts the attention of merchant Xiang You-lin (Tin Ching) and his sister who are keen on killing him for bounty. Cheung then agrees to expedite funds to them in the form of cash and goods stolen from foreign invading colonists.Actors

The upright and invincible leader of the Wulin clan Lord Yin Ke Feng (Cheng Miu) helps the Luoyang government to escort two hundred million worth of gold annually and has never made a mistake. However, he accidentally loses his martial arts skills and the gold is stolen by Chao Hong (Ku Feng), leader of the Flying Tigers thieves. Lone swordsman Lo Yi (David Chiang) meets Yun Piao Piao (Lee Ching) and her fiance Siang Ding (Ti Lung), who are bodyguards for the gold. First, they fight each other before joining forces to help Yin to defeat Chao. Originally down and out, Lu is taken in by the gentle Yun and volunteers to be a bodyguard. The film opens with the chief Shaolin Monks realizing that time is not on their side and they must train more fighters to fight the Qings. The monk Hai Hsien (Shan Mao) opposes this as he is secretly working for the court. Outside many men are sitting in front of the temple waiting to be accepted in, Fang Shih Yu (Fu Sheng), Ma Chao-hsing (Tony Liu) and others, as the temple tests the will of potential students by making them wait outside for days, eventually the two are accepted in for "training". Fang Shih Yu becomes frustrated immediately as Shaolin methods of teaching martial arts are rather obscure, although Ma Chao-hsing begins learning the five animal styles from the start.

The Chinese Navy led by its captain (Ti Lung) is attempting to defend its coastline from a Japanese attack, they send their commando unit led by Szu Shih into the mainland to enlist help to thwart the Japanese before they attack. Japanese officers have been hanging out in a place owned by David Chiang and his hot-headed body guard Fu Sheng but they are secretly opposed to the Japanese. The commandos enlist the help of Chiang and Sheng to kill the Japanese officers led by Shan Mao and destroy their attacking ships.

In late 9th-century imperial China, the Tang dynasty court no longer had effective control of its empire, and the national capital Chang'an was sacked by Huang Chao's anti-government army. Li Keyong, a Shatuo chieftain loyal to the Tang cause, led his troops to suppress the rebellion. His 13 generals—essentially all adopted sons—helped expel Huang from Chang'an, although a rift between some of them became more and more apparent in the process. Following the victory, Li Keyong accepted an invitation for a banquet at military governor Zhu Wen's territory of Bianliang, unaware that it was a trap to assassinate him.

A group of bandits flees with a stolen safe to a small town where they oppress the villagers and forces the town's blacksmith Wei Min-hui (Danny Lee) to unlock the safe. Wei refuses to help the bandits and after he informed the mayor about this, he reports to the officials in a nearby village. The bandits were furious that Wei has fled away and starts killing the villagers, threatening them they will kill a villager every hour if they do not find Wei. Hu Te et al. escape the burning Shaolin temple after the Qing soldiers destroyed it in Shaolin Temple. The group of 5 decide to develop secret codes to identify fellow patriots, enlist those patriots and eventually meet up again to escape to the south away from the Qings, and also identify the traitor who sold out Shaolin temple. Ma Fu Yi (the traitor, played by Wang Lung Wei), joins the Qing top fighters to eliminate the rebels but is exposed by Ma Chao-Tsing who gets captured by Ma Fu Yi. Hu meets up with a group of Shaolin men secretly posing as bandits to rescue Ma as their leader is killed in the process, thus the bandits join the rest of the Shaolin patriots.
