Synopsis
Three beautiful American women come to Madrid and fall in love. Susie Higgins (Pamela Tiffin) arrives and moves in with her old friend Maggie Williams (Carol Lynley) and roommate Fran Hobson (Ann-Margret). Susie experiences a culture shock, when she is informed by Maggie and Fran that all rich, attractive men are taken, and all attractive but poor ones are too proud to take on American women.Actors

In New York City, a performance by noted violinist Paul Boray (John Garfield) is cancelled. At his apartment, Boray is at rock bottom emotionally. His manager Frederic Bauer (Richard Gaines) is angry with him for misunderstanding what a performing career would be like, and for thinking that music is no longer part of his life. To the more sympathetic Sid Jeffers (Oscar Levant), Boray says he has always wanted to do the right thing, but has always been "on the outside, looking in," and cannot "get back to that happy kid" he once was.

Wealthy American Jervis Pendleton III (Fred Astaire) has a chance encounter at a French orphanage with a cheerful 18-year-old resident, Julie Andre (Leslie Caron). A young American secretary, Maria Williams (Maggie McNamara), arrives in Rome and is greeted by Anita Hutchins (Jean Peters), the woman she is replacing at the United States Distribution Agency. They drive to the "Villa Eden" Anita shares with Miss Frances (Dorothy McGuire), the longtime secretary of the American author John Frederick Shadwell (Clifton Webb), an expatriate living in Rome for the past fifteen years. On their way into town, the three women stop at the famous Trevi Fountain. À Paris, le "Temple de Beauté", la clinique de chirurgie esthétique du Docteur Maurice Lamar, attire une clientèle internationale. Lamar demande ensuite ostensiblement à Annie, sa jolie secrétaire, de venir dans son appartement, pour travailler à son nouveau livre. Mais Eve les interrompt et Annie quitte l'appartement en pleurs. De son côté, Marcel demande le divorce. Plus tard, Eve et Lamar passent leur lune de miel sur la Côte d'Azur, Lamar étant l'invité d'une conférence internationale. Annie rencontre Marcel, qui est lui aussi sur la Côte d'Azur, et ils dînent ensemble. Lorsque Lamar quitte Eve et revient à Paris, il trouve sa clinique en plein chaos du fait de l'absence d'Annie. Pour la première fois, il dit à une cliente de retourner à son mari comme elle est. Eve se marie finalement avec Rolando, un homme amoureux de son apparence. Annie démissionne en disant à Lamar qu'elle va épouser Marcel. Lamar poursuit la voiture du couple et cause un accident. Lorsqu'Annie se rend compte que Marcel porte une perruque, elle avoue son amour à Lamar et ils s'embrassent.

Cagney plays a truck driver named Danny Kenny, who starts as a New York boxing contender. Ann Sheridan plays his girlfriend, Peggy. Being successful as a boxer, Danny decides to financially help his brother Eddie (Arthur Kennedy) to become a professional musician. Peggy on the other hand, loses her heart to Murray Burns (Anthony Quinn), a professional dancer, and she turns down Danny's proposal in order to go for a dancing career. Embittered by Peggy's refusal, Danny continues to work as a boxer and eventually gets blinded by his opponent during a fight, who has placed some rosin dust onto his gloves. Now blind, Danny works as a newspaper stand operator, while Peggy's career as a dancer did not materialize. The movie ends with Eddie becoming a successful composer who dedicates his first major symphony at Carnegie Hall to his brother, who is listening to the concert on the radio from his newsstand.
