Synopsis
En apparence au nom du fanatisme catholique, un journaliste (Jean Louis Barrault) assassine une femme aux mœurs légères et tente de faire accuser l'amant de celle-ci ; en vérité, il s'agit d'un crime passionnel motivé par un sentiment de dépit. Pierre Fresnay joue le rôle de l'inspecteur de police qui patiemment mène l'enquête. Le meurtrier se fait subtiliser un document compromettant par un fonctionnaire de police après avoir erré dans les rues chaudes de la ville, il avoue son crime avant de sombrer dans un état de démence.Actors

Gueule d'ange est un gigolo, seul l'argent l'intéresse et il fuit toute responsabilité, ainsi quand Marie, sa petite amie lui annonce qu'elle est enceinte, il devient si odieux qu'il se fait jeter et ne réagit pas quand la jeune fille se retrouve à l'hôpital après s'être jeté sous les roues d'une voiture. Entendant parler d'un homme qui s'est fait humilier par sa maîtresse, il cherche à rencontrer cette femme. C'est Loïna, directrice d'un magasin d'antiquité de luxe mais qui fait aussi en parallèle du trafic de faux tableaux. Les deux personnages se toisent mais finissent par sympathiser et comprendre ce que chacun peut apporter à l'autre. Gueule d'ange utilise son charme pour appâter de riches bourgeoises et leur vendre de faux tableaux, cela jusqu'au jour où il tombe sur une experte en art qui le démasque. Délaissant les tableaux il s'essaie aux faux bijoux mais se fait à nouveau démasquer par une riche comtesse.

Set in Rome and its surroundings, the film tells in a frighteningly realistic, ruthless and grotesque the evil of two powerful men of Italy in the seventies: a Director of illegal buildings (Vittorio Gassman), extremist fascist, and an upright judge, cynical looking in part to the Italian law (Ugo Tognazzi). Both can not stand each other, given the contrasts between the two men in any social, political and philosophical. Everyone hates each other and would like to delete it, but just because of the bad example that the two men give power to the people, many Italians are adversely affected because of cheating and rudeness of the fascist manufacturer and the communist magistrate. The director Dino Risi underlines the misdeeds and the weakness of the Italian people to react accordingly, by focusing on the story of these two men who are each other's opposite of the net.

Petit à petit, Rodion se rend compte qu’il n’a pas d’autre choix que d’avouer son crime.
