Originally a 7 reel feature, the film was considered lost until the 1970s when an abridged version, of about 33 minutes, with French intertitles surfaced in Paris. This poor quality French abridgement is all that survives of The Road to Mandalay.
Synopsis
À Singapour, le trafiquant surnommé 'Singapore Joe' mène ses affaires louches à l'aide de deux complices, le chinois Charlie Wing (surnommé 'English') et Edward Herrington (surnommé 'L'amiral'). Ce dernier tombe amoureux de Rosemary, qui tient un bazar en ville. Le père James, sollicité pour célébrer leur mariage, est le seul à savoir que la jeune femme est la fille de son frère, prétendument disparu, qui n'est autre que 'Singapore Joe'.Actors

The Blackbird (Lon Chaney) is a thief who uses a second identity when necessary: a rescue mission keeper with contorted legs, known as his bishop brother The Bishop. He lives above a cheap bar in the Limehouse district, where his alter ego The Bishop is beloved among all guests, unlike The Blackbird himself. One evenings, the police drops by looking for him after a robbery, and he flees to a vaudeville theater, where his ex-wife Limehouse Polly (Doris Lloyd) has an act. Since their divorce they have become bitter towards one another, but Polly is willing to admit that she once married The Blackbird 'because she saw the soul in him that he did not know he got himself'. Furthermore, she admits to her father that she is still in love with him.

The setting of the film is 1920s London. Sir Roger Balfour is found shot to death in his home. Inspector Burke (Lon Chaney) of Scotland Yard is called in to investigate. Silent Madden, a criminal leader in San Francisco, and his gangster daughter Molly (Priscilla Dean) have forsaken a life of crime after receiving counsel from Chang Lo, a Confucianist philosopher living in Chinatown. A despicable gangster named Black Mike Sylva (Lon Chaney) frames Molly's father for murder, causing Molly to lose faith in abiding the law and prompting her return to a life of crime. Black Mike plots to double-cross Molly as well during a jewelry theft, but Molly gets word from her gangster lover and foils Black Mike's plans.
