The film tells the story of a wealthy Icelandic family, owners of a fish industry company in a small Icelandic coastal town, and various family issues they have to deal with.
Synopsis
Agust a quitté l'Islande pour suivre des études de gestion à Paris, mais il les a rapidement abandonnées pour se consacrer à sa passion : la musique. A la demande de son père, Thordur, il accepte de revenir après plusieurs années dans son pays natal. Accompagné de Françoise, sa fiancée française, il débarque dans un village coiné entre la mer et les fjords. Son père, propriétaire redouté d'une conserverie de poissons menacé par la politique de nouveaux quotas de pêche, refuse de voir le monde qui change autour de lui. Le fils aîné de ce dernier, l'actuel directeur de l'usine, lui conseille de vendre celle-ci avant qu'il ne soit trop tard. Mais Thordur ne peut s'y résoudre et souhaite qu'Agust reprenne l'affaire. Lors d'une soirée où toute la famille est réunie pour parler de l'avenir, les jalousies vont se révéler, les rancoeurs se dévoiler et les passions s'embraser.Actors

Geek Hlynur is approaching the grand old age of 30, he still lives with his mother who is divorced from his alcoholic father, downloads cyberporn and wanders around Reykjavík half-heartedly searching for a job while spending lots of time in Kaffibarinn, the central Reykjavík bar (the bar is owned in real life by writer/director Baltasar Kormákur and his soundtrack composer Damon Albarn, a long-standing Icelandophile). The cramped, dark and oddly furnished house in which Hlynur and his mother live features a bath which transfigures into a sofa as Hlynur steps naked out of it, in the middle of the lounge with his mother watching.

The very beginning of the film, before the opening credits, shows a new widow sitting in a life insurance office. Expecting to be compensated for her husband's death, the widow is informed that she is not entitled to full death benefits because the insurance company has captured footage of her husband smoking and attributes cigarettes to his death. Abe Holt looks on as his co-worker convinces the widow that she's lucky to leave with a small fraction of the award she was expecting.

The film opens with a wedding rehearsal at a small church in an isolated, barren landscape. At the altar the groom-to-be (Jon, a middle-aged literature professor) is repeatedly interrupted by the ringing of his cell phone, much to the annoyance of the minister. The present narrative alternates with flashbacks, in which the disintegration of Jon's first marriage to Anna (a sensitive artist) is seen. Jon's second wife is a former student half his age, which triggers disapproval by some (including his future in-laws). As preparations for the wedding unfold during the "white night" (the shortest night of the year, when it is never fully dark), the reason for Jon's increasing reluctance to marry is revealed: he and Anna visited the same spot a year earlier, when she died in an accident after discovering Jon and Thora (his former student) making love. The marriage finally takes place, and Jon and Thora settle down to a life very much like the one he had with Anna.
