Synopsis

Alberto Sajevo, universitaire spécialiste de l’organisation du travail, a été victime douze ans plus tôt d’un attentat des Brigades rouges. La balle est encore logée dans son cerveau : il doit bientôt subir une opération chirurgicale pour l’extraire, mais avec un risque élevé. Un jour, il rencontre par hasard Lisa Venturi, l’ex-terroriste qui a tenté de le tuer. La jeune femme, condamnée à 30 ans de prison, est en permission et doit pointer au commissariat. L’universitaire cherche à faire connaissance avec Lisa qui ne se souvient absolument pas de lui et se méprend sur ses intentions. L’homme est obsédé par le souvenir des années de plomb alors que la femme tente de tirer un trait sur cette période de sa vie.

Sergio, un homme de quarante ans, sent qu’il doit essayer d’être heureux. Un jour, après un accident de voiture, il s’arrête et réfléchit. Il se rend compte qu’il n’aime plus sa femme et qu’elle a aussi cessé de l’aimer ; même si pour préserver sa tranquillité, celle-ci accepte les incartades de son mari. Sergio n’est plus satisfait de ce qu’il possède : il ne sait que faire de tout ce qu’il a autour de lui, de son travail d’architecte, de sa belle maison et de son fils, de son argent, des amis avec lesquels il ne parvient pas à être hypocrite et dont il ne tolère plus l’hypocrisie. Sergio abandonne tout et reste seul. Seul avec lui-même et avec un de ses ouvriers, qui est surtout un ami, et qui l’aide à comprendre que le paradis de la simplicité existe. Un jour survient le miracle. Sergio rencontre l’amour de sa vie, mais la femme belle, mystérieuse et sensuelle, l’abandonne. Il ne reste plus à Sergio qu’à plonger au plus profond de soi pour tenter de donner un sens à quelque chose dont il ignore lui-même la nature. Lorsque Sergio sera enfin arrivé au terme de sa quête, il retrouvera tout : la vie, l’amour, les amis et surtout l’espoir d’être heureux.

The film is set in 1959 during the Algerian War. Lieutenant Terrien (Benoît Magimel), an inexperienced and naïve junior French Army officer, has volunteered for active service, rather than a safe staff post in Algiers. He is posted to Kabylie, a remote and mountainous region of Algeria, as a replacement for Lieutenant Constantin (Hicham Hlimi) who was killed during a ‘friendly fire’ incident commanding a counter-insurgency ambush operation – i.e. he was accidentally killed by his own side during a confused fire-fight. The war in Algeria is much more complicated than Lieutenant Terrien anticipated as he takes over command of his new platoon at the outpost "Mazel". Within hours of taking over his new command Terrien is ordered to lead a ‘locate and destroy’ mission into the zone interdite (the 'Forbidden Zone') to find a World War II French Army veteran named Slimane, now a local commander of Algerian rebels trying to win the independence of their homeland. Slimane is never seen in person during the film.

In 1995, during the Kashmir conflict, Hilaal Meer, a doctor, agrees to perform an appendectomy on the leader of a pro-separatist group. To avoid detection, he performs the surgery at his house, much to the chagrin of his wife Ghazala, who questions his allegiance. The following day, during a military raid, Hilaal is accused of harbouring terrorists. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assigned the case of three terrorists to Akram Sheikh (Sunil Shetty). The three terrorists are two brothers Ali and Abbas Ramani (Sanjay Kapoor and Arbaaz Khan) and their common girlfriend Laila (Isha Koppikar). As a part of a plan hitched by a corrupt Pakistani general, Ali, Abbas and Laila hitch a plan to extort money from the Indian government. They take control of Elphinston Jail, in the city of Mumbai and using the help of a corrupt scientist, Gopal (Chunky Pandey) (a part of a team headed by Rahul (Aashish Chaudhary), investigating the effects of a deadly virus which could kill any living organism within a 3-kilometer radius.), they load three missiles with the virus. They then take a group of 213 tourists hostage in the jail and demand a ransom of 1500 crores from the government within 24 hours, failing which they will release the missile into major water bodies in Mumbai, thus creating an apocalypse (Qayamat).
