The supporting cast includes Beulah Bondi, Ward Bond, Marjorie Main and John Qualen. The picture was Wayne's first film in Technicolor and was based on the novel of the same name by Harold Bell Wright. The director was Henry Hathaway, who directed several other Wayne films including True Grit almost three decades later.
Synopsis
Dans les Monts Ozark, Jim Lane est blessé par la police alors qu'il surveillait la distillerie clandestine de la famille Matthews. Il est soigné par un mystérieux étranger, Daniel Howitt (surnommé « Le Berger des collines »), qui souhaite s'installer dans la région. Sammy, la fille de Jim, lui conseille d'acquérir la ferme abandonnée des Matthews. Matt le jeune, dont est amoureux Sammy, en est l'héritier et attend le retour de son père, Matt l'ancien, pour venger la mort de sa mère, abandonnée malade avec son enfant, des années plus tôt. The story is based on two distinct early 19th-century themes, including the attempts by abolitionists (Cooper and Raft) to end the slave trade. Although the U.S. Constitution ended the importation of slaves in 1808, slaves were still being brought into the country under foreign flags. The abolition of slavery by Great Britain helped reduce legal trade in slaves by putting the British navy into action against slave traders, but even Britain had its supporters of the trade (here represented by Wilcoxon, as a British naval officer acting for the slave interests). The collision between Cooper and Wilcoxon is complicated by Wilcoxon's sister (Dee) falling in love with Cooper.
