A Stranger Came Home, released in the United States under the title The Unholy Four, is a 1954 British film noir. It was based on the novel Stranger at Home, which was credited to film actor George Sanders but was actually ghostwritten by Leigh Brackett. It was directed by Terence Fisher and starred American actor Paulette Goddard.
Synopsis
Four friends go on a fishing trip but only three return. After an absence of four years, the fourth man, Philip Vickers, returns home an amnesiac. He tells of a "friend" who knocked him out, drugged him, and left him to die. Any one of the remaining men could be a suspect as Job Crandall, Bill Saul and Harry Bryce are all interested in Philip's attractive widow, Angie. Unfortunately, Philip's return coincides with a murder and he becomes the main suspect. Angie joins forces with her husband to help solve the mystery and clear his name.Actors

Mervyn Speight s'évade de prison où il était incarcéré pour meurtre. Un de ses amis engage Hugo Bishop, un avocat apprenti détective privé, pour le retrouver. Il le trouve en effet sur le lieu du meurtre. Mervyn lui dit alors qu'il espère prouver son innocence car il se souvient avoir vu un visage d'homme avant d'être assommé et arrêté. Depuis son arrestation, la femme de Mervyn, Thelma, un rédactrice dans un magazine, vit avec Victor Tasman et prétend être son épouse. Son rédacteur en chef, Maurice Jerrard, est la seule personne à savoir que son vrai mari était en prison. Bishop finit par croire en l'innocence de Mervyn et invite tous les protagonistes à une soirée. Mervyn reconnaît alors Jerrard comme son agresseur. Jerrard s'enfuit, mais finit par tomber et se tuer près de la scène de crime. Désormais libre, Mervyn voyage à travers l'Europe pour que sa femme puisse continuer à vivre avec Tasman.

Bookstore manager John Harman (Brent) reprimands his attractive young clerk Ruby Bruce (Dors) for being late to work. Later the same day Ruby catches small-time crook Jeff Hart (Reynolds) trying to steal a rare book. Instead of turning him in she accepts a date with him. When Harman later tries to kiss Ruby she tells Hart who forces Ruby to blackmail Harman. When he refuses to pay off, Jeff tells Ruby to write a letter to Harman's sick wife, which causes her death from a heart attack. Dazed by the tragedy, Harman gives Ruby 300 pounds when she renews her demands. Jeff catches Ruby hiding part of the money, kills her and hides her body in a packing case. Harman discovers Ruby's body and, thinking he will be accused, flees in panic. He enlists the help of his secretary Stella (Chapman) who helps him hunt for clues. When Stella stumbles on Hart alone she is nearly killed by him but Harman arrives in time to save her. The police arrest Hart.
