Synopsis
XI siècle. Sous le règne de l'Empereur Heian, Genji, le fils d'une ancienne favorite décédée, ne peut, pour ces raisons, prétendre à la succession. Genji a une liaison avec une des épouses de son père, dont naît un enfant. Genji s'exile et s'il connaît de difficiles périodes, il est aussi le préféré des dames. De retour dans la capitale, le prince Genji est bientôt nommé ministre par son fils, devenu Empereur. Celui-ci découvrira le lien de parenté qui les unit...Actors

During a rebellion in 1159 the samurai Morito desires the lady-in-waiting Kesa but she's already married to Wataru. Morito decides to get rid of his rival. He makes Kesa explain to him how he can kill her husband while he sleeps. Kesa provides very precise instructions, yet when Morito follows through on her plan it is Kesa herself who gets killed. Morito understands that Kesa has sacrificed herself because she was determined to save Waturu's life and her honour.

Ugetsu is set in villages which line the shore of Lake Biwa in Ōmi Province in the late 16th century. It revolves around two peasant couples – Genjurō and Miyagi, Tōbei and Ohama – who are uprooted as Shibata Katsuie's army sweeps through their farming village, Nakanogō. Genjurō, a potter, takes his wares to nearby Ōmizo. He is accompanied by Tōbei, who dreams of becoming a samurai. A respected sage tells Miyagi to warn her husband about seeking profit in time of upheaval, and to prepare for a probable attack on the village. Genjurō arrives with his profits, but she asks him to stop. Genjurō nevertheless works long hours to finish his pottery. That night Nakanogō is attacked by soldiers, and the four main characters hide out in the woods.

Yuzo Hibiki est un homme d'affaires brillant, issu d'un milieu pauvre, il a financé ses études en travaillant pour la clinique de Yasuhide Shima à Tokyo. Quand ce dernier tombe malade et que la clinique connaît de graves difficultés de gestion, il lui en confie la direction, plutôt qu'à son dispendieux fils aîné Yasuhiko. Following the battle of Sekigahara, Takezo (Toshiro Mifune) and his friend Matahachi (Rentarō Mikuni) find themselves on the losing side. Instead of the grand victory and glory Takezo had anticipated, he finds himself a hunted fugitive, having to assist a severely injured Matahachi. The pair seek shelter with a widow and her daughter who unknown to them are connected to local brigands. The brigands soon show up and ask for tribute from what the women have stripped off dead samurai, and Takezo has to fight them off. Both women attempt to seduce Takezo but are rejected. The widow then tells Matahachi that Takezo tried to assault her and convinces him to escort her and her daughter to Kyoto. Matahachi agrees even though he loves (and is betrothed to) Otsu (Kaoru Yachigusa), a woman from his village.
