Tatsuo Saitō (斎藤 達雄, Saitō Tatsuo, 10 June 1902 – 2 March 1968) was a Japanese film actor. He appeared in more than one hundred films from 1925 to 1967.

Biography

La JMDB mentionne la participation de Tatsuo Saitō à deux-cent-soixante-et-un films (majoritairement japonais, plus quelques films américains ou coproductions) comme acteur, à partir de 1925 (donc pendant la période du muet) et jusqu'en 1967. En particulier, il tourne à de nombreuses reprises pour le réalisateur Yasujirō Ozu, la première fois en 1928, la dernière fois en 1950, avec Les Sœurs Munakata. Il contribue également à plusieurs films d'Heinosuke Gosho et d'Hiroshi Shimizu, entre autres. Parmi ses films américains, son plus connu est Lord Jim de Richard Brooks, sorti en 1965, où il interprète le vieil artilleur Du-Ramin (un de ses derniers rôles), aux côtés de Peter O'Toole dans le rôle-titre.

Toujours selon le JMDB, Tatsuo Saitō est en outre le réalisateur de cinq films, trois sortis en 1953 (dont un aussi comme scénariste), les deux autres sortis en 1957.

Jim (Peter O'Toole) is a promising young English merchant seaman who rises to first officer under Captain Marlow (Jack Hawkins). However, Jim is injured and left at Java. When he is fit again, he signs on with the first available ship, a dilapidated freighter called the S.S. Patna, crammed with hundreds of Muslims on pilgrimage to Mecca. Paul Robaix (Montand), a famous director, wants to shoot a film in Japan inspired by Madama Butterfly. His wife, an actress named Lucy Dell (MacLaine), has been the leading lady in all of his greatest films, and she is more famous. He feels that she overshadows him and he would like to achieve success independent of her. By choosing to film Madame Butterfly, he can select a different leading lady without hurting her feelings, because she, as a blue eyed, red headed woman, would not be suitable to play a Japanese woman. As a surprise, she visits him in Japan while he's searching for a leading lady. To surprise him further, she disguises herself as a geisha at a dinner party, planning to unveil her identity during the meal.

U.S. intelligence agent Jim Carter is sent to Japan as a National Weekly Indicator journalist to find Taro Matsudo who is helping the Communists there. Matsudo happens to be Carter's college friend. In his hotel, Carter meets Steffi Novak, a mysterious woman who speaks six languages and wishes to accompany him. Together they both reach a place where Taro is present. However, he does not want to meet Jim. Back at his hotel, Jim receives a telegram informing him to reach Enoshima island. Here he meets Taro who refuses to divulge any information about his commander. He comes to know that Matsudo aspired to be a kamikaze pilot but when Japan surrendered during World War II he sided with the Communists. When Jim returns to his hotel room, he is beaten by a group of Japanese men who tell him to stay away from Taro.

The upper-class Toda family celebrates the 69th birthday of their father with a commemorative photoshoot at their outdoor garden. Unfortunately, shortly after the photo session, the father, Shintaro Toda (戸田 進太郎 Toda Shintarō; Hideo Fujino), suffers a fatal heart attack. After his death his eldest son, Shinichiro (進一郎 Shin'ichirō; Tatsuo Saito) announces that as their father had acted as a guarantor for a company which has gone bankrupt, they must help pay off that company's debts. The family decides to sell off all their late father's properties and antiques, leaving only an old house by the sea. Meanwhile, the mother (Ayako Katsuragi) and the youngest daughter Setsuko (節子; Mieko Takamine) would go and stay with Shinichiro and his wife. The unmarried second brother Shojiro (Shin Saburi) takes the opportunity to move away from Japan to Tianjin, China (which had been occupied by Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese war).
