Synopsis
In the hospital in Rome, Italy, an old Russian emigrant woman dies. Dying, she tells her granddaughter that she has hidden her treasures in Leningrad under the lion. Unfortunately, beside her granddaughter she was heard also by a solid doctor, 2 male nurses, an Italian mafioso and a hobbling man. After that they all fly to Russia by the same flight (of course none of them tells the others that he's flying to Russia for the treasures). Having some adventures in the airplane because of mafioso, they all arrive to Leningrad and begin to dig under every lion statue in the city.Actors

The movie plot evolves around Yuriy Detochkin (Smoktunovsky), a humble Soviet insurance agent suffering from a minor mental disorder. Detochkin applies great resourcefullness and exceptional driving skill to stealing cars from corrupt Soviet officials in a Robin Hood way, disappointed by the Militsiya (Soviet police) being unable to fight them efficiently. One of the Detochkin's un-innocent victims is Dima Semitsvetov (Mironov), a retail embezzler hilariously trolled, but still tolerated by his colourful father-in-law Sokol-Kruzhkin (Papanov), a retired Soviet Army officer.

Candido (Christopher Brown) is a naïve young man raised by a Westphalian baron (Gianfranco D'Angelo). Le film raconte les déboires de trois soldats italiens de la division Belluno pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale : le sergent Egisto Brugnoli, qui prend son grade très au sérieux ; Primo, qui après avoir essayé de se faire réformer à cause des otites dont il souffre régulièrement, fait tout son possible pour tirer au flanc ; Colovà, très encombré d'images féminines. Après une période sur le front balkanique, ils sont envoyés en Sicile. Dans les combats qui suivent le débarquement allié du 10 juillet 1943 (Operation Husky), Colovà est blessé et devient eunuque, tandis que Egisto et Primo perdent leur unité, mais rejoignent Salerne, où ils se déguisent en Hitler et Mussolini pour éviter d'être fusillés par les Allemands, avant de tomber aux mains des Alliés, auxquels ils ont bien du mal à expliquer leurs déguisements. Leurs aventures ne sont pas finies car ils sont enrôlés dans une unité italienne aux côtés des alliés, et c'est seulement la paix qui met fin à leurs déboires.

There are three main heroes in this movie: Vera, a waitress; Platon, a pianist; and... a train station where these two people met. The differences in the heroes’ characters and professions, the plight that Platon found himself in (he is to be arrested and undergo trial) trigger a host of both amusing and sad situations which serve as a backdrop for their unfolding love. Platon is innocent of the crime he is accused of. He simply took the blame for his wife’s driving over a pedestrian. But this is known only to Platon’s wife and Vera in whom he confided. However, after the verdict has been passed, Platon’s life is of no interest to his wife, although Vera is ready to wait for his release.
