The film was an "unexpected success" in the box office and gave a fillip to the careers of both director Akku Akbar and veteran actor Jayaram.
Nivetha Thomas received Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist (Female, 2008) for her performance in the film.
Bharya Athra Pora (2013), written by K. Gireesh Kumar and directed by Akku Akbar, is not a sequel to the film.
Synopsis
Sugunan (Jayaram) is a stereotypical Malayali husband who habitually underestimates his wife Bindu (Gopika) in managing a family. Sugunan wants his wife only to keep house - cook food for him, iron his clothes and clean the house. Bindu does all these and more, but there's never a word of appreciation or a compliment from her husband. He doesn't even acknowledge the work that she is doing without any rest in her life. This often results in quarrels between them, but like any docile Indian wife, Bindu tolerates it for some time.Actors

A love affair between Thamarai (Kushboo) and her maternal uncle Nellaiyankondan (Jayaram) is badly received by their family, especially since he is not financially well off. Thamarai's father, King Periyamalaikozhundhu Gounder (Vijayakumar), arranges for her marriage to Mandhiyappan (Prakashraj), ruler of a neighbouring country. Thamarai rejects the arranged marriage, angering Mandhiyappan. She later marries her lover, who had come to see her marry Mandhiyappan, and challenges her brother Chinna Malaikozhundhu (Ponvannan) to marry his daughters off to her sons (the marriage of cousins is a gounder custom). Periyamalaikozhundhu disowns his daughter for choosing Nellaiyankondan and banishes them from his kingdom.

Annan Thambi is the story of twin brothers, Appu and Achu (both played by Mammootty). Appu is a talkative conman who always finds himself in trouble. Leaving school for the day, seven-year-old Taichi finds a baby fox, abandoned by its mother alongside a road in rural Hokkaido. The two bond and Taichi decides to leave the fox with the police as a lost item. The policeman on duty takes a reluctant Taichi and the fox to the local Yajima Veterinary Clinic. It turns out that Taichi has begun to live with Ko, the vet, and his teenage daughter Misuzu after his free-spirited mother Ritsuko has gone to Micronesia to work as a photographer. Many people have abandoned animals with Ko, and paying customers are few with most of his income coming from frequently boarding a friendly dog that is almost part of the family. Taichi feels abandoned as well, and clashes with Ko when the vet sees the new arrival as a burden, especially after discovering that the fox is deaf and blind. However, Taichi names it Helen after Helen Keller and attempts to bring her back to full health while teaching her about the world as sort of a young Annie Sullivan. Even though Taichi gets her to eat, Helen suffers increasing fits stemming from her brain, which is the result of a tumor.

Paul Hegstrom (Ritter) is a seriously disturbed family man who puts his wife and children through physical, mental, and emotional abuse.
