Synopsis
Le film commence en 1922 dans la région de Londres, au Royaume-Uni. Vita Sackville-West est une écrivaine britannique à succès et une femme émancipée qui fume, conduit, signe ses livres de son vrai nom et vit une relation ouverte avec son mari, le diplomate Harold Nicolson, lui-même discrètement bisexuel. Vita vient de lire Mr Dalloway, le dernier livre de Virginia Woolf, écrivaine qu'elle admire et souhaite rencontrer. Mais Vita est issue de l'aristocratie conservatrice, et tant sa mère que son mari se montrent méfiants vis-à-vis de Woolf, qui passe pour folle et fait partie d'un groupe d'écrivains socialistes à la réputation de bohêmes, le Bloomsbury Group, dont les œuvres n'ont à ce moment qu'une diffusion confidentielle. Vita est bisexuelle et, dans sa jeunesse, elle a frisé le scandale en s'enfuyant avec une de ses amoureuses, Violet Keppel. Sa mère, qui a étouffé l'affaire, intervient pour empêcher la parution de son futur livre et lui défend de rencontrer le Bloomsbury Group. Vita finit par se rendre à l'une de leurs soirées et rencontre Virginia : c'est un coup de foudre, non réciproque. Déterminée à mieux connaître Virginia Woolf, Vita entame avec elle une correspondance vivace et soutenue, dont le film utilise de nombreux extraits. Elle s'intéresse à la maison d'édition fondée par Virginia Woolf et son mari Leonard Woolf, Hogarth Press. Vita va jusqu'à lui soumettre et lui dédicacer son prochain livre, Seducers in Ecuador, ainsi que les suivants, qui sont des succès et améliorent les finances de la maison. Elle lie connaissance avec la sœur de Virginia, Vanessa Bell, qui est peintre et dont le mari, Clive Bell, est également peintre.Actors

Victor and Danny met in prison and hatched a plan to kidnap and demand ransom for the only child of a rich family. The film opens with scenes in which they make meticulous preparations to carry out the kidnap. They take their victim, Alice, her head hooded, to a soundproofed room. They cut off her clothing and tie her to a bed with a ball-gag buckled into her mouth. They force her to look at a camera as she is photographed naked. They then dress her in a tracksuit, put a hood on her head and leave her. They bag up both her and their clothes for disposal and Vic sends the pictures to her father as first step towards making the ransom demand. In continuing graphic scenes, they explain to Alice that she needs to sign when she needs the toilet and strip her lower half in order that she use a bed pan whilst still tied up. Neither shows any emotion during her humiliation but Vic, who is dominant, questions Danny's resolve now that the formerly 'hypothetical girl' has become real.

The story takes place in and around Paris, France in 1931. The story told is one of a love triangle between the Millers and Anaïs Nin. Gia Carangi (Angelina Jolie) is a Philadelphia native who moves to New York City to become a fashion model and immediately catches the attention of powerful agent Wilhelmina Cooper (Faye Dunaway). Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) returns to his logging home town of Lumberton, North Carolina from Oak Lake College after his father suffers a near-fatal stroke. While walking home from the hospital, he cuts through a vacant lot and discovers a severed ear. Jeffrey takes the ear to police detective John Williams (George Dickerson), through whom he reacquaints with the detective's daughter, Sandy (Laura Dern). She tells him details about the ear case and a suspicious woman, Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), who may be connected to the case. Increasingly curious, Jeffrey enters Dorothy's apartment by posing as an exterminator, and while Dorothy is distracted by a man dressed in a yellow suit at her door (whom Jeffrey later refers to as the Yellow Man), Jeffrey steals her spare key.
