Frédéric est un adolescent de 16 ans que sa mère a envoyé en 1942 chez ses grands-parents dans un village de Lozère. La France sous l’Occupation. Exécutée pour trahison envers la Résistance, Cora, nom de code « La Chatte », avait été laissée pour morte. Récupérée et soignée par les Allemands, le docteur von Hollwitz, pratique sur elle un lavage de cerveau pour la contrôler et l’utiliser comme contre-espionne. Au printemps 1944, on simule son évasion pour qu’elle reprenne contact avec la Résistance. Elle doit faire capoter la mission de Charles, ingénieur à la SNCF, qui consiste à faire sauter un train chargé de V1 destinés à alimenter les rampes de lancement installées sur les côtes françaises pour bombarder Londres. Mais au dernier moment, La Chatte retrouve sa lucidité.

In 1942, in Paris, which is seized by Germany, a grocer Edmond Batignole (Gérard Jugnot) is living with his family in his grocery building. He has a daughter who is soon to be married. His future son-in-law, Pierre-Jean (Jean-Paul Rouve) and his wife wanted the apartment owned by a Jewish family. When the properties of all the Jews was confiscated the Batignole family got the apartment. The Jewish family was sent to transportation to Germany. After the Batignoles had occupied the apartment the Batignoles organise a party for the SS officials and during that party young Simon Bernstein (Jules Sitruk) of the Jewish family who had escaped from the Germans, returns to his home. Edmond Batignole feels sorry for the boy and hides him in the apartment from his family before anyone else could see him. Soon Simon's cousins meet him in the cellar of the grocery and the grocer plans to smuggle the children over the border to Switzerland.

In 1944, art masterpieces stolen by the Wehrmacht from French museums are being shipped to Germany; the officer in charge of the operation, Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), is an ardent art lover and is determined to take the art to Germany, no matter the cost. After the Germans remove the art chosen by Waldheim from the Jeu de Paume Museum, curator Mademoiselle Villard (Suzanne Flon) seeks help from the French Resistance. Given the imminent liberation of Paris by the Allies, they need only delay the train for a few days—still, it is a dangerous operation and it must be done in such a way that does not risk damaging the priceless cargo.
