Wine was a 1924 American silent melodrama directed by Louis J. Gasnier, produced and released by Universal Pictures under their 'Jewel' banner. The film featured Clara Bow in her first starring role. The film is now presumed lost.

Synopsis

Set during the Prohibition Era, Wine exposes the widespread liquor traffic in the upper-classes. Bow portrays an innocent girl who develops into a "wild redhot mama".

Ottilie Van Zandt is forced to wed her cousin, despite her love for Richard Wayne, the gardener's son. Richard leaves, vowing to return a wealthy man and eligible suitor for her. He returns to find she has already married and, in turn, marries another girl on impulse. As described in a film magazine, Grim Gordon (Strong) is in possession of the Tiger Idol, stolen from a religious sect of Hindu Tiger Worshipers on an East Indian island which he and Peter Strong and Colonel Boyd visited years earlier. The two latter men were killed, but Belle Boyd (Roland), daughter of the Colonel, is alive and has part of the "Pact of Three," a document torn into three parts which shows the location of a treasure discovered during the expedition. Gordon has a pitchblende mine in the western United States, and among the workers are Hindus and Tiger Worshipers. Upon her arrival from an eastern school, Belle Boyd, ward of Gordon, is attacked by a gang of outlaws headed by Bull Shotwell (Kohler), but her life is saved by Jack Randall (Larkin), a mining engineer. Jack is employed by Gordon, but helps the heroine Belle in outwitting the evil forces surrounding her that are attempting to obtain her portion of the torn Pact of Three. In one episode Belle is put into a cage with a live Bengal tiger, and in others she is the subject of several kidnapping attempts.

À la pension Muche, Topaze est un instituteur chahuté par ses élèves qui exploitent sa naïveté. Sur les murs de sa classe s'affichent des sentences définitives comme « L'argent ne fait pas le bonheur » ou « Bien mal acquis ne profite jamais » . Il enseigne et applique rigoureusement ces principes, refusant d'augmenter les notes d'un élève contre rétribution pour contenter une mère influente dans la pension, se mettant ainsi à dos le directeur. Cela contrarie aussi grandement ses espoirs d'avenir avec Ernestine, la fille du directeur dont il est secrètement amoureux. Appliquant une méthode de séduction d'Ernestine désastreuse conseillée maladroitement par un collègue, il déclenche un scandale qui le fait licencier sur-le-champ.
