Bill Jordan, propriétaire d'un ranch, traite son neveu Scott comme un fils, son fils Daniel ayant fui la maison des années auparavant. Un jour, Scott et Bill sont invités chez des voisins pour le retour de Martha Baxter et de sa fille Cindy. Daniel et son ami Roy arrivent, accompagnés de plusieurs juments et d'un étalon noir qu'il dit avoir achetés. Incapable de dresser l'étalon, Daniel est sur le point de le tuer quand Scott lui offre de l'acheter pour 30 dollars. Scott montre beaucoup de patience et finalement arrive à apprivoiser le cheval, qu'il a appelé Midnight. Un jour, alors qu'il est en train de trier des papiers, le shérif trouve un avis à propos d'un vol de chevaux, et se pose des questions quant à la marque sur les chevaux de Daniel. Pour éviter les soupçons, Daniel ordonne à Roy de se débarrasser de Midnight. Après avoir été roué de coups par Roy, le cheval piétine son assaillant jusqu'à le tuer. De peur que Bill veuille tuer l'étalon, Scott cache Midnight dans les collines où, avec l'aide de Cindy, il soigne les blessures du cheval. Plus tard, le shérif convainc Bill que Roy a provoqué l'attaque qui l'a tué, et Bill regagne la confiance de Scott en tuant un lion des montagnes qui menaçait le garçon et son cheval. Daniel finit par se rendre, les charges contre lui sont abandonnées et il récupère les chevaux, sauf Midnight, qui reste avec Scott.

Ben Stride (Randolph Scott) walks into a desert cave encampment during a nighttime rainstorm. He encounters two men taking shelter next to a fire and asks to join them. Stride tells the men he's from the town of Silver Springs, which provokes a mysterious reaction from the two men. They discuss a robbery and murder that recently occurred there. An employee of a savings and loan company successfully robs a bank as an inside job. At first, bank employee Leon Poole (Wendell Corey) is considered a hero during the bank robbery, but the police quickly figure out he's involved in the crime. The cops catch up with Poole and his young wife at their apartment. Poole's wife is accidentally shot to death during a gunfight. Poole is arrested, convicted and sent to prison for the robbery.

The Blue Star of the Nile is stolen from an exhibition guarded by the police under Inspector Farraday. At the behest of a pretty reporter, an amorously forward private detective goes undercover as a patient in a private sanitarium in search of a judge hiding out from the police. The two plan to split the $10,000 reward for the judge's capture. As the reporter and detective begin to fall in love, the detective also falls deeper into danger from an abusive attendant and difficult inpatients. The latter include an arsonist and "The Champ," a lunatic ex-boxer who attacks anyone put into a room with him after he hears what sounds like a bell.
