In the era of Guru Ram Das, one cannot leave out Rajni, youngest daughter of Rai Duni Chand, revenue collector (kardar) of Patti. (The story has all the myth, magic and miracles of a genuine Sakhi, but is nevertheless a charming story). Rajni was a Sikh, a disciple of the Guru. One day she was sitting with her sisters admiring some new clothing they all had received from their father. The girls were ecstatic and exclaiming how good their father was to them. Rajni observed that all gifts are ultimately from God. Their father was merely an instrument of His greatness. Unfortunately for her, he overheard her comment and became very angry.

The entire plot is woven around Indian family values, entrepreneurship and meteoric rise in business of a workshop owning mechanic, Charandas, played by veteran actor Om Prakash. Charandas lives with his dutiful, religious wife Kamla, enacted by Urmila Bhatt, and two children, running a mechanic workshop. He has a good family friend Aslam played by Raj Mehra. His bank loan is sanctioned and in a time span of 10 years, he builds an engineering empire, becoming a rich tycoon. All through he shares family get togethers with his friends and their families and it is here, that Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, make a special appearance in a famous Qawwali, "Han Dekh Lo Ishq Ka Martava", sung by Aziz Nazan Qawwal, Yesudas, on Aslam's birthday.

Prakash (Navin Nischol), a librarian, lives with his daughter. One day, his friend and private detective Captain Usman (Suresh Oberoi) visits him and gives him a diary along with a dagger (Khanjar) to safeguard them. He also informs about their importance for a case under his investigation and threatens by some gangsters about them. Soon after this, Prakash learns that Usman is murdered. He also receives a call from a stranger enquiring about Usman's diary and the dagger. Meanwhile, a smart girl named Preeti (Reena Roy) starts to flirt and get closer to him to know about the diary and the dagger. Prakash notices her acts, illustrates to the police the story of Usman's diary, the dagger, his murder and Preeti's attempts for them. They instruct him to follow her to learn about the gangsters she works with. Upon his insistence, Preeti informs about her activities under the instructions of Prince (Amjad Khan). Soon Prince learns about her behaviour and kills her. After few days, his brother-in-law Ramesh (Shekhar Kapur), married to his younger sister Jyothi (Rita Bhaduri), is also found murdered. Disturbed by these mysterious murders leading to the dagger, Prakash and his magician friends Jagat (Mehmood) and Rasvanti (Jashree T.) visit an old town Udaigarh, famous for Swamiji (Amjad Khan). One mystery leads to a deeper mystery and a series of thrilling events unravel the mystery of the khanjar.

Ravi Varma (Navin Nischol) loses his parents in childhood and wife Rajni in an accident. He keeps himself immersed in business. His family physician advises him to take a holiday for rest. He happens to meet Aarti Mathur(Shabana Azmi) and both are attracted to each other. Ravi is unable to express his love and attraction for Aarti. The plot is an intricately woven one. It starts from childhood with the story of Ashok (also called Shoki by his childhood friend Vinod) (Dharmendra) who is a wealthy industrialist's only son. He is passionate about cars from childhood befriends Vinod (Vinod Khanna) who is passionate about trains; its his dream to make India's fastest train. Rakesh (Vinod Mehra) shares same passion as Vinod. Randhir (Danny Denzongpa) is in a tussle from childhood to make a better train than Vinod's. Childhood turns into adulthood and one day both attend a dance function organised by the Indian Railways. This is where Ashok and Vinod fall in love with two beautiful women: Seema (Hema Malini) and Sheetal (Parveen Babi). Ashok is now deeply in love with Seema and they are planning to get married after their engagement. Vinod is married to Sheetal and they have a son Raju. One day Vinod, who is now a top notch railway engineer, gets awarded with the contract to build a super-fast express train between New Delhi and Mumbai. Rakesh (Vinod Mehra) is his assistant. Randhir, the losing engineer and ex-lover of Sheetal, swears revenge and leaves.

Billa (Rajinikanth) is a powerful mafia lord, who in spite of being one of the most wanted on the list of Interpol, remains elusive to the police. Along with the police, he makes a few other enemies through his merciless approach in running his organisation, especially when he kills one of his own men, Rajesh, when Rajesh decides to leave the business. This introduces Billa to two new enemies, Kamini (Helen), Rajesh’s fiancee, and Priya, (Sripriya) Rajesh’s sister. When Kamini seduces Billa and attempts to have the police arrest him, her plan backfires as Billa outsmarts her and escapes, and in the process Kamini was killed.
