The film tells the story of David Vass (Julio Chávez), an obsessed filmmaker who attempts to make an epic account of the French adventurer Orelie-Antoine de Tounens, who in the 19th century assumed the title of King of Patagonia and Araucania.
Musicardi's octogenarian widow, Ana María de los Dolores Buscaroli, called Mamá Cora by everybody (Antonio Gasalla), has four children: Antonio (Luis Brandoni), Sergio (Juan Manuel Tenuta), Emilia (Lidia Catalano) and Jorge Musicardi (Julio De Grazia) with whom she lives and goes through financial troubles. This situation, plus lack of space and constant generational conflicts, makes Susana (Jorge's wife) ask desperately for the siblings to take their mother with any of them for a while.
The film is set in Argentina in the 1980s, in the last years of the country's last military dictatorship, during which a campaign of State sponsored terrorism produced thousands of killings and torture of accused political leftists and innocents alike, who were buried in unmarked graves or became desaparecidos.
Ricardo Guglielmini is the mayor of Colonia Vela, a small countryside village in an undisclosed province of central Argentina. He plots with the local Peronist political boss, Héctor Suprino, and union leader Reinaldo to get the deputy mayor Ignacio Fuentes out of power due to his increasing popularity (which threatens Guglilemini's decade-long hold on the mayor's office), despite Fuentes being an avid peronist and having once worked under Juan Domingo Perón himself.
Pedro Bengoa, an ex-union organizing demolition worker and Bruno Di Toro, a coworker friend of his, decide to blackmail the corrupt company they work for, setting up a fake accident in a copper pit. Di Toro was supposed to pretend to be Mute as a consequence of an explosion, and Pedro would corroborate his story. Things don't go as planned and Di Toro loses his life, leaving Pedro to continue the plan on his own, while pretending to be Mute. However, when the company finally agrees to an economical settlement, Pedro refuses to accept, searching justice primarily, and his case goes to the courts. This event changes Pedro's life for ever.
The film opens on Martín Santomé's (Héctor Alterio) 49th birthday, a widower and the father of three children: the eldest, the embittered Esteban (Luis Brandoni); the caring middle-child Blanca (Marilina Ross) and Jaime (Oscar Martínez), a closeted homosexual. He goes to work thinking they have forgotten his birthday, and once at the office, he assigns two new employees to their jobs: the effeminate, nervous Santini (Antonio Gasalla) and the young Laura (Ana María Picchio), with whom he soon develops a bond. Back home, Martín is surprised with a party thrown by his children.

By 1930, Evaristo, a humble worker who lives near the Riachuelo river in Buenos Aires, is preparing to go to work with two partners. His daughter Mary calls him from her bed; the girl has a fever and this forces Evaristo back. The tram that the three workers missed falls into the river and almost all the passengers die. For this and other episodes, Mary earns the reputation that she can predict the future.

Ofelia's wedding day is approaching and she is to be married to Eduardo. She has some pre-wedding jitters during a meeting with her lover Gustavo but decides to tie the knot anyway. On her wedding night, Gustavo shows up in their room, murders Eduardo, and proceeds to turn Ofelia into a vampire so that they can be together forever. In the present day 1960's, a group of young men and women take shelter in an abandoned lodge after their van breaks down. Soon, Ofelia appears and seduces one of the guys and meanwhile the girls go missing. It is up to the other guys to figure out what is happening and Ofelia must make a decision as to how much longer she can continue with her cursed life.
Polin is an eleven-year-old troublemaker in reform school for unknown reasons. After suffering from harsh treatment at the hands of the staff there, Polin finally reaches a breaking point and snaps, punching one of the supervisors in the face. He is then sent to the police station where he is locked up in a cell and left alone. Polin soon breaks out and travels back to his hometown, a rural fishing village, where he meets up with his best friend and falls back into his old routine—smoking, pickpocketing, shoplifting, skinny dipping with his friends and picking fights with the neighborhood bullies—all the while trying to avoid a run-in with the law, which he knows is inevitable.

Il la traita comme son épouse servante et obéissante. Ils vécurent sans histoires jusqu'à ce qu'un voleur de bétail, pourchassé par les gardiens de troupeaux, survint dans leur enclos. Atteint par une balle, l'homme n'était pourtant pas mort. Cora le protégea et le soigna. La vie à trois aiguisa bien vite les appétits et les convoitises. Le Polonais découvrit le secret de l'autre : une ceinture chargée de billets de banque. Il échafauda un meurtre. Le même jour, le voleur de chevaux proposa à Cora d'abandonner le mari au fonds d'un puits. Celui-ci, inlassablement creusé, était censé contenir de l'or noir. Mais, c'est plutôt Cora, par vengeance, qui les y laissa choir. À présent, remords et sentiment de culpabilité l'obsèdent sans cesse.
À Punta del Este, Marcela, une jeune étudiante, préfère les joies de la plage aux cours scolaires. Sa grand-mère bouscule ses habitudes en lui proposant un étrange marché : veiller aux derniers jours de Martín, le fils de son amant, atteint d'un mal incurable. Marcela devra aussi simuler la passion amoureuse en échange d'un séjour à Paris, tous frais payés, et d'une collection du couturier Dior.
La misérable demeure d'une famille pauvre a disparu lors de la crue du Río Salado. Plusieurs voyages en train (en wagon à bestiaux !) à la recherche d'un endroit où se loger les conduiront dans l'arrière-pays, dont ils découvrent les habitants. A leur retour, ils seront pourvus par des politiciens en quête d'électeurs d'une maison... en terrain inondable.
