Une femme fatale est un personnage type qui utilise le pouvoir de la sexualité, ou des sens, pour piéger le héros malchanceux. Elle séduit, parfois sans se « donner », et est souvent caractérisée comme une femme très féminine et séductrice (dans la littérature décadente, puis au cinéma). Dans certaines situations, elle use du mensonge et de la contrainte plus que du charme.
Elle peut aussi être (ou prétendre être) une victime, aux prises avec une situation à laquelle elle ne peut échapper ; les personnages de Rita Hayworth dans La Dame de Shanghai (1947), ou de Kathie interprété par Jane Greer dans La Griffe du Passé (1947), films "Noir" par excellence en donnent un terrible exemple. Leurs armes de prédilection typiquement féminines sont le poison, ou le suicide.
Bien que typiquement dans le camp du mal, les femmes fatales ont aussi incarné des antihéroïnes dans certaines histoires, ou se repentent pour devenir des héroïnes à la fin du récit. Dans la vie sociale, la femme fatale torture son amant dans une relation déséquilibrée, en ne formulant jamais la confirmation de ses sentiments. Elle le pousse tellement à bout qu'il devient incapable de prendre des décisions rationnelles. Robert Mitchum dans la Griffe du Passé ne pourra s'échapper de l'emprise de Jane Greer qu'en mourant par elle et avec elle.

Foaming at the mouth, Kasuga charges an ambusher, Koh, the fourth-ranked hitman, and they kill each other. Hanada leaves the client to secure Koh's car but hears three gunshots and rushes back to find the client is safe and three additional ambushers have been shot cleanly through the forehead. At a second ambush, Hanada kills more gunmen and sets Sakura, the second-ranked hitman, on fire. Sakura madly rushes towards the client but is shot dead by him. On his way home Hanada's car breaks down. Misako, a mysterious woman with a deathwish, stops and gives him a ride. At home, he has rough sex with his wife, fueled by his obsession with sniffing boiling rice.

As described in a film magazine, Reginald Jones (Walsh) is a jinx and is always getting stung. One of his stunts is to butt in when he sees a woman being ill treated, and in one adventure is decoyed into a badger game. As a consequence, he loses a fortune when he is unable to attend the funeral of an aunt. He goes to sea on a schooner and the passengers include a rich man and his daughter, who are treasure seekers. The captain is rough and pulls a stunt to get the rich man into his power. Reginald comes to their aid, but it's a tough situation until American sailors from submarine chaser S.C. 143 come to the rescue, jumping the railing and knocking out the villainous crew.
