Kakashi Hatake (はたけカカシ, Hatake Kakashi) est un personnage du manga Naruto créé par Masashi Kishimoto. Dans l'univers de la série, Kakashi est un ninja d’élite du village de Konoha. En tant que chef de l’équipe 7, composée à l'origine de Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiwa, et Sakura Haruno, il est le premier mentor des principaux protagonistes de l’histoire.
Kishimoto avait prévu d'introduire Kakashi nettement plus tôt dans l'histoire mais finalement il retarda son entrée afin de se laisser plus de temps pour le travailler.
Initialement décrit comme distant et apathique, son dévouement envers ses amis et ses élèves se révèle tout au long de la série. Son passé est développé dans six chapitres situés entre la première et la seconde partie de la série appelés Kakashi Gaiden. Il apparaît dans de nombreux produits dérivés, incluant trois des quatre films de la série ainsi que l'ensemble des OAV et dans plusieurs jeux vidéo. Kakashi apparaît également dans un OAV à l'occasion de la vente de t-shirts de la série au magasin UNIQLO à Paris le 28 décembre 2010.
Kakashi reçut de bonnes critiques de la part des sites spécialisés dans l'anime, le manga ou encore le jeu vidéo. Bien qu'il soit parfois décrit comme un personnage typique du manga shōnen, la dualité de sa personnalité, à la fois sérieuse et décontractée, est très appréciée par les critiques ; T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews allant jusqu'à déclarer que la série aurait pu être renommée Kakashi. Il est un personnage populaire, se classant régulièrement dans le Top 5 dans les scrutins officiels du magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump et fait l'objet d'un merchandising important incluant porte-clés et peluches.

Naruto Uzumaki is arrested to the criminal containment facility known as Hoozuki Jou (鬼灯城, lit. "Physalis Castle") in the Hidden Grass Village, after he is declared responsible for attacking the Fourth Raikage and the members of Jōnin from the Hidden Mist and Rock Village. There, Mui (無為), the head of the prison, places the Tenrou o Tsukau (天牢を使う, lit. "Sky Prison Control") seal on Naruto which limits his chakra. On the first night, Naruto uses a clone as a decoy to escape from prison, but his clone is secretly taken by Mui to have the Nine-tailed beast's chakra extracted which leads him to the real Naruto, and he is shortly recaptured and placed in solitary confinement, before delaying Mui's plans.

In the potential outbreak of a Fourth Great Ninja World War, a few ninjas with Kekkei Genkai abilities begin to disappear from the land of Lightning, Earth, Water and Wind. The Land of Fire remains the only village not affected by these events that people start to suspect its role in these incidents, and rumors of a possible rebellion begin to circulate. With the other nations amassing troops on the borders of the Land of Fire and threatening invasion, the Feudal Lord of the Land of Fire orders Tsunade to capture the real culprit and prove Konoha's innocence, in the event of failure and the Land of Fire decides to destroy the village to preserve world peace.

A mysterious group of ninja called the Sora from the Sky Country makes a surprise attack on the Leaf for vengeance, due to them nearly destroying the Sky Country, during the Second Great Shinobi World War. At the same time, Naruto, Sakura and Hinata are sent along to help a boy's village. They accompany Amaru and Doctor Shinnō back to the village. Later, Naruto learns that Amaru is really a girl, due to her falling into the water for her scapel.

The film opens with the bad predicting future that Naruto battles a monster that kills him and the Nine Tailed Fox inside of him, impaling him with its tail. A funeral is held for Naruto at his home village, where Sakura Haruno, Rock Lee and Neji Hyuga attending, along with others. Finally, the scene shows Tsunade looking out her window, asking if 'Everything is just decided by fate'.

Naruto Uzumaki, Kakashi Hatake, Sakura Haruno and Rock Lee are assigned to protect the prince of the Land of the Moon, Michiru, during his world trip; other escorts had been hired, but quit due to being treated poorly. The Land of the Moon is a very wealthy nation, so Michiru tends to buy whatever he wants and has a very materialistic worldview. His son, Hikaru, also acts in much the same manner, annoying Naruto. During the trip, the caravan stops at a circus, during which Hikaru shot an apple that was in one of the circus acts. Amused, the ring master said if he can hit the apple with the monkey holding it moving he will get a prize. Hikaru made the shot. Hikaru took a liking to a rare sabertoothed tiger, Chamu, featured there, so he asked for it. The ringmaster claimed it to big and dangerous to take as a prize. Michiru ended up purchasing not only the saber toothe, but the whole circus as well, placing it under the team's protection. Before heading to the docks, they stop at the house of Michiru's ex-wife Amayo. At the docks, Hikaru attempts to befriend the tiger, but finds that it dislikes humans. He loses interest in the circus and during a sea voyage, when a storm hits, he appears unconcerned about the animals' well-being, causing Naruto to become disgusted at his lack of value for them. Upset by Naruto's view of him, Hikaru goes out to help Chamu get to safety, and Naruto saves both of them after they wash overboard. The next day, Naruto and Hikaru become friends.

The film opens with Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno watching a film starring Yukie Fujikaze, in a local cinema. Kakashi Hatake has summoned them to watch it as preparation for their next mission: to prevent Yukie, who plays Princess Gale in the films, from being captured during production of her latest film. Yukie is later revealed to be Koyuki Kazahana, a princess from an island known as the Land of Snow. Doto Kazahana, who is revealed to be Koyuki's uncle, was responsible for the murder of her father Sosetsu in a coup d'etat. During the shooting of the film, Doto's henchmen, wearing Chakra armor, attempt to capture the princess, but Team 7 manages to delay the princess from being captured. Doto eventually captures Koyuki and kills her bodyguards, who reveal themselves in an attempt to protect and restore her rightful place as the ruler of the Land of Snow. Naruto enters the ship to rescue the princess, only to be captured and forced to wear a chakra-draining device. Doto forces Koyuki to hand over a crystal necklace her father had given her when she was young, thinking that this is a key that can unlock the hidden treasure Sosetsu had left behind before detaining both Koyuki and Naruto.
