Alexander Toluboff (1882 – 1 July 1940) was a Russian-born American art director. He was nominated for three Academy Awards in the category Best Art Direction. He was born in Lublin, Poland and died in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

In 1880, a motley group of strangers boards the east-bound stagecoach from Tonto, Arizona Territory to Lordsburg, New Mexico Territory. These travelers are unremarkable and ordinary at first glance. A traveller named Lockwood (Miles Mander) is caught in the snow and stays at the estate of Wuthering Heights, despite the cold behaviour of his aged host, Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier). Late that night, after being shown into an upstairs room that was once a bridal chamber, Lockwood is awakened by a cold draft and finds the window shutter flapping back and forth. Just as he is about to close it, he feels an icy hand clutching his and sees a woman outside calling, "Heathcliff, let me in! I'm out on the moors. It's Cathy!" Lockwood calls Heathcliff and tells him what he saw, whereupon the enraged Heathcliff throws him out of the room. As soon as Lockwood is gone, Heathcliff frantically calls out to Cathy, runs down the stairs and out of the house, into the snowstorm.

Pepe Le Moko (Boyer) is a notorious thief, who, after his last great heist, escaped from France to Algeria. Since his escape, Moko became a resident and leader of the immense Casbah, or "native quarter", of Algiers. French officials arrive insisting on Pepe's capture are met with unfazed local detectives, led by Inspector Slimane (Calleia), who are biding their time. Meanwhile, Pepe begins to feel increasingly trapped in his prison-like stronghold, a feeling which intensifies after meeting the beautiful Gaby (Lamarr), who is visiting from France. His love for Gaby soon arouses the jealousy of Ines (Gurie), Pepe's Algerian mistress.

Former police detective Sam Wye is on the trail of socialite Kay Kerrigan who is accused of fatally shooting millionaire cad Thomas Bruhme. Kay has taken a ship to the South Seas followed by Sam, Sam's secretary Jean Livingstone as well as police detectives Ben "Homer" Blodgett and George Faulkner. Along the way, through various adventures, Sam and Kay fall in love, as do Homer and Jean. Sam eventually determines that the actual killer was a jealous husband whose wife was having an affair with Bruhme. Kay is thus cleared and free to marry Sam.

Irene Vail (Jean Arthur) decides to divorce her husband, the rich ship owner Bruce Vail (Colin Clive), after he falsely accuses her of having an affair. Bitterly jealous and possessive of Irene, Vail learns that he can prevent the divorce from being finalized if he can provide evidence that she has been involved with another man within six months of filing for divorce. Vail pays his driver, Michael (Ivan Lebedeff), to go to Irene's hotel room in Paris and pretend to be her lover, with the intention of having a private detective catch them in a compromising position. However, an unknown man overhears Irene's startled cry upon finding Michael in her room. A struggle ensues when the man defends Irene against Michael's unwanted advances, and ends with Michael on the floor, unconscious. When Vail and the detective burst into the room, the man threatens them with a gun, demands Irene's jewelry, and takes Irene hostage.

Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda) is an ex-convict who cannot get a break after being released from prison. He marries but is then wrongly convicted for a bank robbery in which six people are killed. He is sentenced to death by electrocution. On the eve of his execution a gun smuggled into the execution area enables him to escape. During the escape he unintentionally kills the prison chaplain. The chaplain was trying to convince Eddie that he has had a last minute pardon. This is because the body of the guilty bank robber and the getaway vehicle with the stolen money have just been recovered from a lake.

The plot of Stand-In concerns the takeovers of Hollywood studios that occurred during the Great Depression. Fowler Pettypacker (Tully Marshall), a Wall Street banker, is debating whether or not to accept an offer from Ivor Nassau (C. Henry Gordon) to buy "Colossal Pictures," a fictional film studio on Poverty Row. The studio has not been turning a profit, but financial analyst Atterbury Dodd (Leslie Howard) advises against selling. He stakes his reputation on his mathematical calculations that show Colossal should turn a profit. The bank sends Dodd to Hollywood as the new head of the studio.

Eve Fallon, une manucure, est amoureuse de l'inspecteur de police Danny Barr, et devient jalouse lorsqu'il enquête sur le vol des bijoux de M Cole. Celle-ci confie la récupération de ses bijoux à Richard Morey, un racketteur qui se fait passer pour un détective privé. Dan tente d'expliquer à Eve la nature de ses relations avec M Cole, mais elle refuse de le croire. Licenciée de son salon de coiffure, elle trouve un travail comme journaliste grâce à un de ses amis, Jack Sully. Morey retrouve ses acolytes, Russ Cortig et Benny Battle, et leur ordonne de rencontrer les voleurs, Carey et Don Butler, dans le parc et de leur offrir 40 000 $ pour la marchandise. Les Butler repoussent cette offre, les bijoux étant assurés pour 200 000 $. Une bagarre s'ensuit et les Butler s'enfuient après avoir frappé Cortig, qui tire dans leur direction, tuant accidentellement un bébé dans sa poussette. Dan est chargé de l'enquête et, après avoir trouvé une liste des bijoux volés près de la scène de crime, fait le lien entre les deux affaires. Eve se réconcilie avec Dan et interroge Bessie, un témoin, qui lui donne la description de Battle, qu'elle connaît car il a flirté avec elle. Après que Bessie a formellement identifié Battle sur une photo, Dan l'arrête, mais Bessie est menacée par les hommes de Morey et refuse de l'identifier lors d'une confrontation. Pour pousser Battle à avouer, Eve écrit un article annonçant qu'il s'est déjà mis à table, article qui fait la une. Lorsque Battle est relâché de prison, Eve tire en l'air avec l'arme de Dan et Battle, effrayé, retourne dans la prison pour tout avouer. Cortig est arrêté aussi, mais un alibi de circonstance l'innocente lors du procès. Eve démissionne du journal car on ne lui permet pas de continuer à enquêter sur Cortig, et Dan en fait autant pour pouvoir s'occuper de Cortig à sa façon. Eve, redevenue manucure, reçoit des cartes postales de Dan de divers endroits de la côte Est. Elle révèle à Morey, sans savoir qu'il est impliqué, que Dan est à la poursuite de Cortig. Morey charge alors ses hommes de se débarrasser de Cortig en échange de sa part de l'affaire des bijoux. Après le départ de Morey, Eve remarque l'empreinte de son pouce et se rappelle que la police est à la recherche d'un homme avec une cicatrice à ce doigt. Elle transmet alors l'empreinte à la police. Dan de retour à New York finira par arrêter Morey et Carey, et fera sa demande en mariage à Eve.
