Clément Henri Andreani est le fils d'immigrés italiens arrivés aux États-Unis en 1888. Orphelin très tôt, il est pris en charge par sa tante, mais doit se débrouiller beaucoup par lui-même. Des amis, conscients de ses qualités artistiques, l'aident à suivre des cours d'art à San Francisco. Dès l'âge de 16 ans, il commence à travailler.En 1925, il entre à la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, et en 1928 à Universal Pictures.

The film is set in the reign of King Louis XIII. When Châtellerault fails to win the heart of the icy Roxalanne de Lavedan, he wagers his entire estate against that of Bardelys that Bardelys can't either. The film is a romantic melodrama about two childhood friends who grow up to be soldiers in Germany. One of the friends, Leo (Gilbert), becomes infatuated with Felicitas (Garbo), the wife of a powerful count (a marriage about which Felicitas neglects to inform Leo). The count calls for a duel of honor with Leo, but insists that it be done under the false pretense that the quarrel was due to angry words exchanged between the two at a card game in order to protect the count's reputation. The Blackbird (Lon Chaney) is a thief who uses a second identity when necessary: a rescue mission keeper with contorted legs, known as his bishop brother The Bishop.
