À sa mort, une vidéo est diffusée dans laquelle il explique qu'il léguera son immense fortune, 500 milliards de dollars, ainsi que sa société, GSS, à la personne qui réussira à trouver l’easter egg (« œuf de Pâques ») caché dans l'OASIS. Wade Watts, un jeune orphelin de 18 ans vivant à Columbus, est un fin connaisseur de Halliday et de l'OASIS, via son avatar Parzival, Wade va tout tenter pour trouver l’œuf. Il devra faire face à la multinationale Innovative Online Industries (IOI) et son PDG, Nolan Sorrento, prêt à tout pour prendre le contrôle du monde virtuel. On a mission in Mexico, unofficially ordered by the previous M, James Bond kills two men arranging to blow up a stadium; in doing so the building they are in explodes and collapses.
