Thakur Suraj Pratap (Jackie Shroff) sees a young woman performing pooja at a temple, and instantly falls in love with her. He finds out that the woman's name is Pooja (Ashwini Bhave), and belongs to a poor family, consisting of her dad, Ramlal, her mom, and a brother named Raju (Salman Khan). He approaches Ramlal for the hand of Pooja, and Ramlal is delighted to accept him as his son-in-law. They are married with pomp and ceremony. Pooja is very fond of Raju, and takes him along. At the Thakur's palatial home, they are introduced to Jyoti (Rambha) Pratap's sister. Years later, all have grown up. Pooja has been unable to have any children, and Raju and Jyoti are in love. One day Suraj meets Vaishali (Shweta Menon), a stunning courtesan, and decides to make her his mistress. He disregards any advise against this decision, and even casts Raju away, and cautions him from having to do anything with Jyoti or his household. He even threatens to divorce Pooja over Vaishali. Unable to bear the shock, Ramlal passes away. Raju's attempts to convince Suraj to let go of Vaishali are all in vain, as Suraj openly weds Vaishali, and asks Pooja to accept this decision or else leave his house. Pooja will now have to decide to stay with Suraj or leave him with his new wife.

Anirudh (Nana Patekar) is released from a facility treating patients with mental ailments. Anirudh also happens to be an exceptional artist and does portraits of new people he meets. As he struggles with adjusting with the "normal" world, he encounters Sunita (Manisha Koirala), an escort and Ranjan (Jackie Shroff), the son of a renowned politician. Ranjan, is madly in love with Sunita but Sunita does not feel the same way about him. Anirudh is the only person to see beyond Sunita's seemingly comfortable and affluent existence and knows that deep down she is extremely sad and alone. Judge Pratap Sinha (Jeetendra) is a renowned judge who does not pass judgement by sitting down on the judge's chair but he himself investigates and bring the criminals to their fate. This worshiped of law has a wife Sujata (Sujata Mehta) who is a very famous lawyer. He also has a sister Ashwini (Ashwini Bhave) who is a brave police officer. The city's Mafia Don D.V.M's (Kiran Kumar) brother Jaggi commits a gruesome murder of a lady journalist Bharti. He is arrested and tried by judge Pratap Sinha who passes a death sentence on Jaggi. One day while judge Pratap was going to the court he sees Sunil (Sunil Shetty) stabbing one man to death. With Pratap as witness he tells Ashwini to arrest Sunil, who gets shocked because Sunil is her lover. The court sentences Sunil to death. In jail Sunil meets notorious criminal Mangal (Mukesh Khanna), who is Pratap Sinha's enemy. Before Sunil is hanged, D.V.M. tells judge Pratap that Sunil is innocent and that D.V.M. himself had trapped Sunil. Judge Pratap is stunned as if a lightening had struck him. To save the respect of the law Pratap has to break the law. He runs away with Sunil from jail. Behind judge Pratap and criminal Sunil, are the full police force from one side and on the other is D.V.M's henchmen. Did Sunil prove his innocence? What happened to D.

Vijay (Sunil Shetty) sole ambition is to become a collector like his father was. He is concentrating completely on his studies except for a few disturbances by Pooja (Anjali Jathar) who loves him and wants to marry him. Vijay always believed that his parents were in fact murdered and not killed in an accident, by their old faithful security officer Babu (Danny Denzongpa). Vijay starts searching for Babu, and finally when he finds him, Babu tells him that he was merely used as a pawn to cover up his parent's murder and the actual killer is roaming scot free, and only one man can lead Vijay to the killer and that is Girdhari (Lalit Tiwari) in Khandala. But before Vijay can find the truth, Girdhari is killed. Vijay and Babu start working in a casino owned by Shanti Prasad (Anupam Kher). There the local don Rana (Mohan Joshi) becomes their enemy, who is after Shanti Prasad's casino and Vijay's life. Finally when Vijay decides to leave Khandala, he comes to know of the actual murderers. Vijay loses Babu in the fight. Now Vijay is all-alone to fight with his enemies.

Annapoorna lives with her son and daughter, and struggles to get by, trying to earn a living from the teashop near a railway station once owned by her now deceased husband. Her son Kannan does whatever he can to help whilst trying to continue his education, however this proves difficult and he fails his exams. His mother sends him to a military recruitment camp, hoping he will find employment. This seems to be the family's only hope, however this option is expensive. Eventually Kannan is admitted after Annapoorna pays a hefty sum of money to a man associated with the camp. Later, Kannan is killed in a stampede at the camp, and his bereaved mother brings his body back home in an ambulance. Annapoorna's daughter waits anxiously for the return of her mother and brother.
