Biography

Née Bella Cohen à Bucarest, Bella est l'aînée d'une famille de trois enfants. Elle émigre avec sa mère dans le Lower East Side à Manhattan.

Avec son mari Samuel, elle signe de nombreuses pièces, comédies musicales et scénarios de films.

Elle a été nommée pour un Oscar en 1941 pour Mon épouse favorite (My Favorite Wife).

The film focuses on various guests staying at New York City's famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Malgré ses efforts pour l'éviter, c'est à cause de Nancy qu'il rate une correspondance car il était en train de chercher les gants que la jeune femme avait oubliés. Il la retrouve à la porte de chez lui, car elle a découvert que non seulement George avait disparu mais qu'il n'étais pas comme elle le lui avait dit directeur de magasin. Comme elle n'a nulle part où aller, elle demande à Malcolm de l'aider à retrouver son fiancé. Il est sur le point de la jeter dehors mais, quand Vivian arrive, il lui dit qu'il est avec Nancy. Habitant chez Malcolm, Nancy prend une part de plus en plus importante dans la vie de ce dernier et dans celle de Robert. Malcolm commence à tomber amoureux d'elle, de même que Robert. Il le nie mais quand George réapparaît et réclame Nancy, il se bat avec lui. Malcolm finit par admettre qu'il l'aime et la demande en mariage. Peu après le mariage, Nancy et Malcolm s'embarquent pour l'Europe, mais elle réalise soudain qu'elle a oublié ses gants à terre, Malcolm court pour les retrouver mais ne peut revenir à temps au quai et voit le bateau s'éloigner.

In April 1917, former newspaperman William Gordon (William Powell) is commissioned in the U.S. Army. The day before he is to leave Washington, D.C. for France, he meets socialite Joel Carter (Rosalind Russell) at an embassy gathering. The couple spend the day together where Gordon confides that because he once wrote a book on cryptography under a pen name, the army is searching for him to put him to work behind a desk, but he is eager to get into the fighting. Just before he boards his train, Gordon is ordered to report to Assistant Secretary of War John Carter (Samuel S. Hinds). Over his objections, Carter assigns Gordon to the code-breaking room to help break an intercepted German message that Major Brennan (Lionel Atwill), an experienced British cryptologist, has been unable to decipher. Gold-digging chorus girl Mary (Carole Lombard) marries the head of a bootlegging syndicate, gangster "Shoots" Magiz (Nat Pendleton), but the illegal liquor business goes down the drain when Prohibition is repealed, and Shoots is knocked off by rival Daniel Dingle (Sam Hardy). Mary, looking for a new sugar-daddy, hooks up with Dingle, and when Dingle is removed from the scene by Mickey "The Greek" Mikapopoulis (Leo Carrillo), transfers her attention to him in return for a "trust fund". All the time, fast-talking straight-shooter Jimmy "Office Boy" Burnham (Chester Morris), Shoots' former bodyguard and errand boy, has looked after Mary, passing her advice and snappy remarks whenever they're needed. In the end, Mary and Office Boy end up together, but only after "Merry Widow Mary" gives away all the dirty money she was given.
