Bruno Frank, né le 13 juin 1887 à Stuttgart en Allemagne, mort le 20 juin 1945 à Beverly Hills aux États-Unis, est un écrivain allemand.

Biography

Fils d'un banquier de Stuttgart, Bruno Frank étudie le droit et la philosophie à Tübingen, Munich, Strasbourg, Heidelberg. Reçu docteur à Tübingen, il sert comme soldat pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il entretient une amitié étroite avec Lion Feuchtwanger et le jeune Klaus Mann.

Après l'incendie du Reichstag, il émigre le 28 septembre 1933 en Autriche, puis en Suisse, en France et en Angleterre. Dans l'exil, il écrit son deuxième grand roman historique après Trenck (1926), Cervantes (1934). En 1937 paraît le roman Le Passeport (Der Reisepass), qui décrit la vie en Allemagne sous le Troisième Reich.

Frank soutient les efforts de Klaus Mann pour créer une revue regroupant les différents groupes antinazis de l'émigration, Die Sammlung. Toutefois, il se montre de plus en plus sceptique, devant les conflits qui opposent milieux de gauche et milieux conservateurs. Son seul écrit politique reste Le Mensonge comme principe d'État (Lüge als Staatsprinzip, 1939), dans lequel il dénonce la dictature hitlérienne

Il connaît le succès avec Une Tempête dans un verre d'eau (Sturm im Wasserglas, 1930), comédie portée à l'écran en Grande-Bretagne en 1936 et en 1960 en Allemagne, avec Josef von Báky à la mise en scène, Therese Giehse, Peter Lühr. Une autre comédie, Nina, paraît en 1931. Il a également écrit des essais et des scénarios, comme Le Sonneur de Notre-Dame (Der Glöckner von Notre-Dame, 1939).

En 1939, il s'installe aux États-Unis, où il réside jusqu'à sa mort en 1945. Ses restes reposent au cimetière de Forest Lawn Memorial Park, à Glendale.

Cliff Taylor (George Raft) is an ex-con who wants to go straight, but since being released from prison on parole, he finds it hard to find and hold a job due to his criminal past. Cliff's younger brother Tim (William Holden) is worried because he cannot afford to marry his girlfriend Peggy (Jane Bryan) and increasingly disillusioned about being able to make a position for himself in the world honestly. Afraid that Tim might end up leading a life of crime like himself, Cliff decides to help him find the money to settle down. He tells his family he has found a job as salesman, but in reality he gets back to ex fellow convict Charles Martin (Humphrey Bogart) and they organize a number of robberies. With the money he gets from his criminal activities, Cliff is able to buy a garage for his brother, who is now able to get married. Cliff, in the meantime, decides to quit the gang. However, after a failed robbery, Martin and his pals hide in Tim's garage. The police finds out, and Tim is taken to the police station. Cliff manages to exonerate his brother from the charges, but in exchange Tim has to identify the robbers and testify against them. Before the police can proceed to arrest Martin, Cliff meets him in his house and tells him to escape before being caught. However, Martin's pals, seeing their boss and Cliff together, understand that they are trying to escape and kill them.

Au XVI siècle, on assiste aux exploits et aux amours du jeune et fougueux Miguel de Cervantes, futur auteur de Don Quichotte. De ses démêlés avec le cardinal Giulio Acquaviva et l’Ottoman Hassan Bey, en passant par son alliance avec le pape Pie IV, par ses amours contrariées avec la belle courtisane romaine Giulia, par son combat auprès de Philippe II d’Espagne contre les Maures, par sa bravoure à la bataille navale de Lépante où il perd l’usage de son bras gauche, mais gagne une pension, jusqu’à sa capture en même temps que son frère Rodrigo par des pirates et leur emprisonnement à Alger par Hassan Bey. Miguel ayant acquis une renommée du fait de ses exploits guerriers, Hassan Bey monnaye la libération des deux frères contre rançon à leur famille, mais également au roi d’Espagne. Durant cette négociation, Hassan Bey réduit les deux frères en esclavage, mais Miguel fomente une rébellion, ce qui lui vaut d’être soumis à la torture puis condamné à mort. Heureusement, la rançon est payée juste avant son exécution et Hassan Bey rend leur liberté aux frères Cervantes qui peuvent enfin regagner leur pays.

Marie Sklodowska (Greer Garson) is a poor, idealistic student living in Paris and studying at the Sorbonne. She neglects her health and one day faints during class. Her tutor, Prof. Perot (Albert Bassermann) is sympathetic and, finding that she has no friends or family in Paris, invites her to a soirée his wife is throwing for a "few friends" (primarily professors and their wives). Among the many guests is physicist Pierre Curie (Walter Pidgeon), an extremely shy and absentminded man completely devoted to his work. He allows Marie to share his lab and finds that she is a gifted scientist. Appalled that she plans on returning to Poland to teach after graduation, rather than devoting her life to further study, he takes her to visit his family in their country home. Marie and Pierre both tend to concentrate on science to the extent that they don't realize until the last minute they have fallen in love. Even when Pierre asks Marie to be his wife, he does so in terms of reason, logic and chemistry.

The film opens in the year 1759 with the arrival of Langdon Towne (Robert Young) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The son of a cordage (rope)- maker and ship rigger, he returns from Harvard University after being expelled for complaining about college food and drawing an unflattering picture of the President of Harvard College. Though disappointed, Langdon's family greets him with love, as does Elizabeth Browne (Ruth Hussey), the daughter of a noted clergyman. Elizabeth's father (Louis Hector) is less welcoming, however, and denigrates Langdon's aspirations to becoming a painter. That evening, while drinking in the local tavern with friend Sam Livermore (Lester Matthews), Langdon makes indiscreet remarks disparaging Wiseman Clagett (Montagu Love), the king's attorney, and the Indian agent, Sir William Johnson, unaware that Clagett is sitting in the next room with another official. Facing arrest for his comments, Langdon fights the two men with the help of "Hunk" Marriner (Walter Brennan), a local woodsman and friend, before they both escape into the woods.

The film opens in 1482 with King Louis XI and his close advisor, Frollo, the King's Chief Justice of Paris, in a printing shop. Frollo is determined to do everything in his power to rid Paris of anything he sees as evil, including the printing press and gypsies, who at the time are persecuted and prohibited from entering Paris.
