Cervantes is a highly fictionalized 1967 film biography of the early life of Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616). It was the first screen biography of the author. Directed by Vincent Sherman, and filmed in color, it stars Horst Buchholz as Cervantes, Gina Lollobrigida as a prostitute with whom he becomes involved, José Ferrer as Hassan Bey, the Turk who held Cervantes in captivity, Louis Jourdan as Cardinal Giulio Acquaviva, and Fernando Rey as King Philip II.
Filming began in 1966 and the movie was released in several countries between 1967-1969.
Released in the U.S. as a B-movie, and retitled The Young Rebel, the film went nearly unnoticed at the box office and did not do well critically.
Synopsis
Au XVI siècle, on assiste aux exploits et aux amours du jeune et fougueux Miguel de Cervantes, futur auteur de Don Quichotte. De ses démêlés avec le cardinal Giulio Acquaviva et l’Ottoman Hassan Bey, en passant par son alliance avec le pape Pie IV, par ses amours contrariées avec la belle courtisane romaine Giulia, par son combat auprès de Philippe II d’Espagne contre les Maures, par sa bravoure à la bataille navale de Lépante où il perd l’usage de son bras gauche, mais gagne une pension, jusqu’à sa capture en même temps que son frère Rodrigo par des pirates et leur emprisonnement à Alger par Hassan Bey. Miguel ayant acquis une renommée du fait de ses exploits guerriers, Hassan Bey monnaye la libération des deux frères contre rançon à leur famille, mais également au roi d’Espagne. Durant cette négociation, Hassan Bey réduit les deux frères en esclavage, mais Miguel fomente une rébellion, ce qui lui vaut d’être soumis à la torture puis condamné à mort. Heureusement, la rançon est payée juste avant son exécution et Hassan Bey rend leur liberté aux frères Cervantes qui peuvent enfin regagner leur pays.Actors

The young journalist Bachmann (Horst Buchholz) is released from prison by the intervention of Cesar Boyd (Martin Held), a respected and prosperous journalist who hires him as his assistant. Bachmann had been in jail for his attempt to interview war criminals at Spandau prison. Bachmann works for Boyd who acts as his mentor, however, Bachmann’s stories are published under Boyd’s name. Bettina (Maria Perschy), the daughter of a friend comes to study in Berlin and will stay at Boyd. Both Bachmann who picks her up at the airport and Boyd develop an interest in the young woman. In the commotion, a story that has to go out to a Paris newspaper is not prepared, and Boyd, after listening to a tale from his chauffeur Jupp (Gert Fröbe), in the last minute makes up a story of five German soldiers who have lived in a supply bunker in Poland for six years where they had gotten trapped when it was exploded at the end of the war. There is one survivor, now blind, who was brought to a hospital. The story becomes an international sensation and people want to know more. Journalists are sent to Poland to investigate. The Russians suspect the story to be a ruse to send spies. Pressure is put on the Polish government to release the blind soldier. In Germany, widows believe the blind soldier may be their missing husband. Bachmann who initially thought that Boyd had reliable sources for his story, soon recognizes that it is all a big lie. He breaks with his mentor, and tries to warn the public about the hoax. He convinces Bettina of Boyd’s lies, and both of them leave him to start a new beginning.

In the 1830s, in the small Danish town of Odense, cobbler Hans Christian Andersen spends his day spinning fairy tales for the village children, teaching them lessons about pride, humility, love and growing up through his fanciful characters. One day, the stern schoolmaster, who believes Hans is wasting his pupils' precious time, implores the Burgomaster and councilmen to curtail the cobbler's habit of distracting the students with his storytelling, but even the adult citizens easily become a rapt audience for Hans' fables. Hans finally agrees to stop distracting the children and returns to his shop, where his teenage assistant, the orphan Peter, begs him to stop causing trouble. However, later that day Hans is drawn back to the schoolhouse to see the children. As he hears the schoolchildren drone mathematical phrases, he compares an inchworm's myopic measuring of beautiful blossoms to the schoolmaster's blindness to beauty and creativity. On yet another day, when the children do not arrive at the sound of the school bell, the schoolmaster deduces that Hans is again distracting his pupils. When the schoolmaster then demands that the Burgomaster and the councilmen choose between him and the cobbler, they decide that Hans must leave Odense. Peter, who has witnessed the verdict, returns to the shop and secretly tries to save his friend from the shame of being exiled by eagerly suggesting Hans travel to Copenhagen. After much prodding, Peter succeeds in convincing Hans to leave that afternoon by reminding him that he will be the envy of the town for having been the first to visit the famous city. Soon after Hans begins his journey, Peter joins him on the trail, bringing all the shop's tools to start their business anew.
