Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) seems to have picked up the pieces of his life and moved on, and is now dating L.A. radio reporter Geri Nichols (played by Bronson's real-life wife Jill Ireland). When his leading lady (and fiancée) Monica Welles (Redgrave) is found dead from an apparent suicide after the opening night of her Broadway stage debut, playwright Alex Dennison (Preston) is left heartbroken. On the first anniversary of her death, he gathers the cast and crew from that ill-fated night in the same Broadway theater, ostensibly to read a new play he is working on, a mystery in which a famous actress is killed. As the reading progresses, the scenes seem to the cast to be uncomfortably close to actual encounters they might have had with Monica. When pressed, Alex finally reveals that he believes that Monica was murdered, and that someone at the theater is her killer.

Edith Alice "Breezy" Breezerman (Kay Lenz), a free-spirited teenage runaway, wakes up from a one-night stand, gets dressed, and then walks out the door with her guitar. She catches a ride to the valley with a stranger who seems harmless at first, then when he starts to drive in the wrong direction and talks about "giving his last hitchhiker something to yell about", she jumps out of his car, runs-away and ends up on Frank Harmon's (William Holden) front lawn. Frank is a middle aged divorced man, who lives a solitary life at his post modern home in the hills. As he gets into his car to drive to work, Breezy jumps into his car asking for a ride to the valley. Breezy tells Frank about her the trouble she had this morning with the stranger and the two bond. Eventually Breezy sees a dog lying in the road and makes Frank pull over. Angered by Frank's lack of empathy for the poor animal Breezy becomes angry and then runs off crying. Realizing that the dog is still alive Frank carries the dog back to his car, when he opens the door the back seat Frank sees that Breezy left her guitar in his back seat and becomes angry because of all the trouble she has caused him.

A nun returning from a sabbatical is met at a bus station by two of her colleagues. En route to their convent their car breaks down on a desert road and they decide to flag down a passing motorist. Meanwhile 2 escaped convicts have abducted a local businessman's niece with a view to collecting a ransom, only to have the woman fall on her head and die while attempting to flee the abandoned house they are holed up in. Larry, ( Majors) the kidnapper under whose watch the victim died, passes the nuns in their disabled Plymouth Valiant and decides to stop. The nuns mistake him for a helpful motorist and he tows them with his Volkswagen Type II to his hideout (in the opposite direction from Victorville where repair facilities would be accessible). The nuns soon learn their fate and are held hostage in a locked room with boards nailed over the windows. The kidnappers devise a plan to get the ransom money from the rich uncle (who is unaware his niece is dead) by having one of the nuns pose as the dead girl. Larry orders Eddie ( Conrad) to take Sister Ellen ( Nettleton) to a wig shop and to a phone booth that she might call her convent and give false information to explain their not showing up. Eddie is something of an unwitting party, not wishing to commit further crimes and at one point directs the hostages to hide and tells Larry they escaped earlier. Eventually the captives are discovered hiding in a closet by Larry after which a commotion occurs and he is killed by his own gun. Eddie feels forced to take Sister Ellen hostage and attempts to flee by stealing a light aircraft but before he get away there is a climactic scene on the runway.

Pete Nelson, a smooth operator who has just been discharged from the Army, joins forces with his old buddy, the loud Jerome X. Hotchkiss, and together they join a circus. The Clyde Brent Circus, to be exact. Jerry has taken a job as apprentice lion tamer.
