Dhruva Chatterjee or Dhruv Chatterjee was a noted writer and screenwriter of Hindi cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. Memorable movies written and scripted by him include Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan (1960), Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962), Gehra Daag (1963), Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Kohra (1964), Gumnaam (1965), Chor Machaye Shor (1974), Dus Numbri (1976) and Fakira (1976). He was also nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Story in 1960, for Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan (1959).

Kailash Sharma is found guilty of sexually molesting Shanno and killing Dheeraj Kumar Verma, and sentenced to be hanged by the Jammu & Kashmir Sessions Court. After his appeals at both High and Supreme Courts fail, he asks his wife, Seema, to take their daughter, Pinky, and re-locate elsewhere. Seema and Pinky re-locate to Bombay where she takes up sewing to make a living. She befriends their neighbour, Ratan, and both get married. 14 years later Pinky has grown up and has a boyfriend, Vikram, who she wants to marry. Meanwhile, Kailash, who is still alive, as his sentence was changed to life imprisonment, arrives in Bombay to look for his family. After sometime he does find them but decides not to interfere in their lives as they appear to be happy. But when Seema finds out she goes to meet him secretly - a visit that will set off a chain of events that will end up drastically changing their lives forever.

Inspector Shiv Nath is an honest and diligent police officer in Bombay, and lives with his wife, Radha, and a young son, Arjun. While making several arrests in connection with counterfeit money and drugs, he comes to know that his close friend, Karamchand is also involved in this racket. Before he could take any action, he himself is arrested by the police for possession of fake money and drugs, and sentenced to a jail term, but he escapes and his whereabouts are unknown. Radha loses her mind and is institutionalized, while Arjun takes to petty crime and on reaching adult-hood is the Don of the area known and feared as "Dus Numbri". He meets with and falls in love with a petty thief and card-sharp, Rosemary Fernandes. When Radha accidentally meets with Rosemary, she thinks it is Sundari, Karamchand's wife, and then Radha starts to regain her sanity. But not for long, as Arjun, Radha, and Rosemary will soon be enmeshed in a plot that may well rid them of their senses, that is if it does not kill them first.

Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) is an engineer, who is in love with a rich girl named Rekha (Mumtaz). Rekha's snobby father disapproves because Vijay is not wealthy, and so he has arranged for her to be married to a son of an evil politician. The evil politician is played by Madan Puri. Rekha's father and the politician frame Vijay for a crime that he didn't commit, and he goes to jail. When he's in jail, he becomes friends with three other prisoners. All four men escape from jail. After Vijay reconnects with Rekha, they all go to a small village called Shantinagar and help save the village from the evil politician and the bandits that terrorize the town. The evil politician is arrested. Rekha's father feels remorse and accepts Vijay. Vijay and his three prisoner friends go back to jail. However, the film ends on an optimistic tone indicating that their good deeds will be rewarded (i.e. that their prison sentences will be shortened).

Inspector Shankar (Biswajeet) is assigned to investigate the mysterious death of Sunder Singh (Sujit Kumar), whose ship wrecks on a stormy night. In denial of her son's death, Sunder's mother keeps doing various acts in madness. She keeps serving food for Sunder, talks with his photos, and keeps feeling that her son has returned. Meanwhile Shankar and Sheila fall in love. But in her madness Sunder's mother starts preparations of Sunder's wedding with Sheila. Sunder's face-burnt body is found and the mystery continues whether his death was an accident or a murder.

After murdering a rich man named Sohanlal and covering it up as a car accident, a man named Khanna, who ordered the hit, is murdered as well, by someone he is shocked to see. It is revealed that Sohanlal's murder was actually a conspiracy of many people, also unknown. Before dying, Khanna has told the news of Sohanlal's death to his niece Asha. Some days later, seven people, including Asha, win a trip to an island in a chartered plane, courtesy a lucky draw in a gala.
