His career began in the 1916 film, The Lost Bridegroom, which starred John Barrymore. In his twenty-three year career, he appeared in over fifty films, mostly in supporting or smaller roles. His final performance would be in the 1939 Joe E. Brown vehicle, Beware, Spooks!, in a minor role. Sturgis died on December 13, 1947 in Los Angeles, California.

In San Francisco in the 1850s, a city where gold fever has left shipowners short-handed, Bat Morgan, a sailor come ashore is robbed and nearly shanghaied aboard another ship. Managing to escape, he sticks around town to pay back those responsible and then to take a cut in the action in the vice district. Ricardo Cortez as Gary Curtis (alias Farnsbarns who is known for being a PI that skirts the law in New York) is sent to get some letters from Karen Morley as Jenny Wren (who is a courtisan). Jenny Wren tells H. B. Warner as Priam Andes to have some of her former lovers come to a gathering at Crestwood. Larry Sheldon is a gambler, who learns that a friend of his has been murdered by a local gangster, Spot Willis. When he goes to confront Spot, a melee ensues in which Spot winds up dead. Thinking that he is responsible for the death, Sheldon flees the city aboard a train, with his companion, Chick. They share a Pullman compartment with an itinerant minister, Mr. Walters, whose wallet Chick unobtrusively removes from his pocket.
