John T. Dillon (June 19, 1876 – December 29, 1937) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in 136 films between 1908 and 1936. He died in Los Angeles, California from pneumonia. Actor Edward Dillon was his brother.

Eve Fallon, une manucure, est amoureuse de l'inspecteur de police Danny Barr, et devient jalouse lorsqu'il enquête sur le vol des bijoux de M Cole. Celle-ci confie la récupération de ses bijoux à Richard Morey, un racketteur qui se fait passer pour un détective privé. Dan tente d'expliquer à Eve la nature de ses relations avec M Cole, mais elle refuse de le croire. Licenciée de son salon de coiffure, elle trouve un travail comme journaliste grâce à un de ses amis, Jack Sully. Morey retrouve ses acolytes, Russ Cortig et Benny Battle, et leur ordonne de rencontrer les voleurs, Carey et Don Butler, dans le parc et de leur offrir 40 000 $ pour la marchandise. Les Butler repoussent cette offre, les bijoux étant assurés pour 200 000 $. Une bagarre s'ensuit et les Butler s'enfuient après avoir frappé Cortig, qui tire dans leur direction, tuant accidentellement un bébé dans sa poussette. Dan est chargé de l'enquête et, après avoir trouvé une liste des bijoux volés près de la scène de crime, fait le lien entre les deux affaires. Eve se réconcilie avec Dan et interroge Bessie, un témoin, qui lui donne la description de Battle, qu'elle connaît car il a flirté avec elle. Après que Bessie a formellement identifié Battle sur une photo, Dan l'arrête, mais Bessie est menacée par les hommes de Morey et refuse de l'identifier lors d'une confrontation. Pour pousser Battle à avouer, Eve écrit un article annonçant qu'il s'est déjà mis à table, article qui fait la une. Lorsque Battle est relâché de prison, Eve tire en l'air avec l'arme de Dan et Battle, effrayé, retourne dans la prison pour tout avouer. Cortig est arrêté aussi, mais un alibi de circonstance l'innocente lors du procès. Eve démissionne du journal car on ne lui permet pas de continuer à enquêter sur Cortig, et Dan en fait autant pour pouvoir s'occuper de Cortig à sa façon. Eve, redevenue manucure, reçoit des cartes postales de Dan de divers endroits de la côte Est. Elle révèle à Morey, sans savoir qu'il est impliqué, que Dan est à la poursuite de Cortig. Morey charge alors ses hommes de se débarrasser de Cortig en échange de sa part de l'affaire des bijoux. Après le départ de Morey, Eve remarque l'empreinte de son pouce et se rappelle que la police est à la recherche d'un homme avec une cicatrice à ce doigt. Elle transmet alors l'empreinte à la police. Dan de retour à New York finira par arrêter Morey et Carey, et fera sa demande en mariage à Eve.

In San Francisco in the 1850s, a city where gold fever has left shipowners short-handed, Bat Morgan, a sailor come ashore is robbed and nearly shanghaied aboard another ship. Managing to escape, he sticks around town to pay back those responsible and then to take a cut in the action in the vice district. Organizing the various gambling houses (and other forms of vice implied but, for Code reasons, not explicitly stated) into a consolidated enterprise in alliance with a corrupt city boss, Jim Dailey, he comes into conflict with a crusading newspaper, run by Jean Barrat, the daughter of the late murdered publisher, and Charles Ford, the idealistic editor to whom Jean is all but engaged.

As described in a film magazine, Marie (Suratt), employed in a New England Cannery, meets "Iron" Lloyd (Martindel), a millionaire financier and tenement owner, whose yacht is cruising off the coast. He poses as a stoker and soon learns from Mary that, if she had the means, she would wage battle against the oppressive tenement lords. As a test, Lloyd, whom she knows as Strange, has his lawyer transfer a fortune to her as a legacy from a lost relative. Mary goes to New York and starts her fight against Lloyd. Ogden Deneau (Dillon), Lloyd's rival in business, associates himself with Mary, pretending to be interested in her work but planning to crush Lloyd. But she has an old score to settle with Deneau and enlists Strange's aid. On the day of the great coup, she arranges to meet Deneau at a country inn, and there exposes him to his wife (Kelly). Returning to the city she learns from Strange that Deneau is bankrupt and that Strange is really Lloyd. She is furious as first, but relents when Lloyd tells her that he was testing her and asks her to start life anew with him.

Nell Gordon (Fenwick) is unfortunate in her ancestry; her father is a crook, but she possesses qualities of resourcefulness and loyalty. Though she love her father, she detests his associates, particularly one, Bill Whipple (O'Keefe), who is her constant suitor, Joe Dunham (Sturgis), who does the scouting for the trio, finds a likely bank in the town of Wheaton, the fact that a new bookkeeper is needed there opening a way for the gang to get into the bank, as Nell is an expert. Working on her love for her father, who is a very sick man, Whipple and Dunham persuade Nell to go to Wheaton and take the position. Boarding with Rev. Dr. Singleton, Nell wins the confidence of Jim Brooks (Moore), the cashier of the bank, and of Tom Hoadley (Dillon), his best friend and sheriff of the country. What the girl is working for, of course, is the combination of the safe, but before she has a chance to get it, she begins to realize that she is in love with cashier. On the very day that she learns the combination and copies it. Jim proposes to her, and, after a mental struggle, she decides that her love for him is greater than her loyalty to the gang, and she surrenders, concealing her identity, she had come to the town under an assumed name. Becoming suspicious of Nell's Delay inforwarding word to them, Whipple and Dunham attempt to force her father to write a note ordering her to act quickly, but the old man refuses and is shot. The crook go to Wheaton and try to force Nell to rob the bank. She has undergone complete reformation and has even confessed her identity to Jim's friend and is planning to leave Wheaton rather than bring disgrace upon the man she love. She discovers that her father has been murdered by the crooks and decides to be revenged. Apparently consenting to their demands, she gets them into the bank, but not until she has warned the sheriff. Nell is wounded in the fight which follows, and when she awakens finds herself in the arms of the man from whom she attempt to escape because she loved him.

The hero, a janitor played by Chaplin, is fired from work for accidentally knocking his bucket of water out the window and onto his boss the chief banker (Tandy). Meanwhile, one of the junior managers (Dillon) is being threatened with exposure by his bookie for gambling debts unpaid. Thus the manager decides to steal from the company. He is caught in the act of raiding the vault by the bank secretary (Carruthers) who rings the downstairs for help. Chaplin comes to the rescue only to be misjudged by the Chief Banker as the thief. The Secretary fingers the manager and Charlie receives a just reward and a handshake for foiling the robbery.
