Edward Lachman, A.S.C. (born 31 March 1948) is an American cinematographer. Lachman is mostly associated with the American independent film movement, and has served as director of photography on films by Todd Haynes (including Far From Heaven, which earned Lachman an Academy Award nomination) and I'm Not There in 2007 and Steven Soderbergh such as Erin Brockovich (film). His other work include Desperately Seeking Susan in 1985 as well as Robert Altman's last picture A Prairie Home Companion (film) in 2006. Lachman has also worked on several non-American films, including two documentaries by Wim Wenders (one of which, Lightning Over Water, was shot in the United States) and La Soufrière by Werner Herzog.

In 1989, Lachman co-directed a segment of the anthology film Imagining America.

In 2002, Lachman co-directed the controversial Ken Park with Larry Clark. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers.

In 2013 He produced the series of collaborating videos for the new Daft Punk Album Random Access Memories.

Biography

Lachman was born in 1948 in Morristown, New Jersey; he received a BA from Harvard University in 1965 and studied in France at the University of Tours before pursuing a BFA in painting at Ohio University.

Following the murder of Diana Floss (Careena Melia) in a restaurant shooting in Cape Ann, Massachusetts in 1973, her fiancé Joe Nast (Jake Gyllenhaal) elects to stay with her parents. Her father Ben Floss (Dustin Hoffman) is a realtor whose business partner has recently left. Ben and Joe go into business as Floss & Son, as this was their plan before Diana's death. Joe goes to the post office to retrieve all the invitations that had been sent out for his and Diana's wedding, and with the help of Bertie Knox (Ellen Pompeo) he retrieves seventy four of seventy five. She finds the last invitation and takes it to his house later that night. He drops her off at a local bar, and returns home, despite her inviting him in for a drink. Joe and Ben attend a local property fair, and Ben pitches the idea of redeveloping a block in the town to developer Mike Mulcahey (Dabney Coleman). Mulcahey agrees, but they need to get all the tenants to agree.

The opening of the film depicts teenager Ken Park (nicknamed "Krap Nek") skateboarding across Visalia. He arrives at a skate park, where he casually sits in the middle of it, sets up a camcorder, and shoots himself in the head with a handgun. His death is used to set up the rest of the film, which follows the lives of four other teens he used to hang out with, shortly before the suicide.

Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is working in the toy department of a department store in New York during the Christmas season. While Melanie's mother spends her holidays in Kenya, a group overweight girls go a diet camp in the Austrian mountains. Everyday life in the camp is marked by drills, rationed meals, and food counseling. At night, the girls discuss puberty's problems, smoke cigarettes and take food from the kitchen. Actually they are prostitutes, although they deny that they have had encounters with other white women and do not ask a fee for their services, but instead ask for financial support for relatives in need. Teresa's friends hire a male stripper for her birthday, who dances nude for them. They are disappointed that they do not succeed much in sexually arousing him.
