Harry R. Sokal (20 February 1898 – 7 March 1979) was a Romanian-born German film producer. He produced 22 films between 1926 and 1977. After working in the German film industry, Sokal emigrated following the Nazi rise to power in 1933. He lived and worked in Britain, France and the United States, before returning to Germany in 1949. In 1963 he was a member of the jury at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival.
Après la prise du pouvoir par les nationaux-socialistes en 1933, il émigre en Angleterre avant de s'établir en France en 1937.
En 1941, il s'installe aux États-Unis où il travaille pour la petite société de production Monogram avant de retourner en Allemagne en 1949 où il fonde la société de production Henry Sokal-Film. Il produit son premier travail de l'après-guerre, Föhn, qui un remake de son plus grand succès, L'Enfer blanc du Piz Palü. Jusqu'à sa mort, il travaille avec les studios munichois Bavaria Filmstudios situés à Grünwald. Son film le plus célèbre de l'après-guerre sera Le Héros et le Soldat de 1958 avec Otto Wilhelm Fischer, d'après la comédie de George Bernard Shaw.
Harry Sokal était marié avec l'actrice Charlotte Kerr. Il décède en 1979 et est enterré à Grünwald.

Dr. Johannes Krafft (Gustav Diessl) and his bride Maria are spending their honeymoon mountain climbing in the Bernina Alps in southeast Switzerland. While climbing the north face of Piz Palü in the strong föhn winds, the loving couple's guide Christian (Christian Klucker) warns Krafft not to be cocky in this dangerous environment, but the doctor dismisses the warning. Just then a violent avalanche descends on the couple, the safety rope breaks, and Maria is swept down into a deep crevice in the Piz Palü glacier. Despite his wife's initial cries for help, Krafft is unable to reach her in her icy grave. Krafft spends the next years wandering the mountain alone like a ghost, looking for the body of his lost bride.

The film is set in the year 1820 and centers around a student at a university in Prague, Balduin. At a student-led outing to a country inn, Balduin encounters the figure Scapinelli who offers him money "for very low interest." Balduin believes him to be a loan shark and ignores him to go engage in a fencing match with another student. After the match, the viewer sees Scapinelli on a cliffside, watching a young woman (later revealed to be Margit, the daughter of a count) on horseback who is participating in a fox-hunt. He manipulates the situation such that the animals run amok and head towards the inn. Balduin sees Margit on the horse and catches her when she falls off. As a reward, he receives an invitation to her father's house, Count Schwartzenberg. There he becomes aware of his own poverty in comparison to Margit's fiance, who is a baron. Later that night, Scapinelli again comes for Balduin and makes an offer. Balduin signs a contract stipulating that Scapinelli can have anything in the room he wants in return for 600,000 florin. Balduin signs and Scapinelli takes out a small bag and proceeds to pour the entirety of the 600,000 onto the table. Scapinelli then takes his part: Balduin's reflection.

Diotime, une danseuse professionnelle, se retrouve au sommet d'un triangle amoureux quand elle est poursuivie par deux alpinistes, Vigo (Ernst Petersen) et Karl (Luis Trenker), son ami plus âgé, vers lequel Diotime se sent attirée. Cependant Diotime ne peut s'abstenir d'encourager les attentions de Vigo lors d'une séance de ski fougueuse. Alors qu'elle a un moment d'intimité avec Vigo, son ami les surprend et, de colère, défie Vigo de tenter une escalade dangereuse. Durant la course, il provoque la chute de Vigo mais se repent et le sauve. Les deux hommes se perdent dans la montagne et périssent avant que Diotime et les secours ne puissent les atteindre.
