Herb Jaffe (né le 20 mai 1921 à New York et mort le 7 décembre 1991 à Beverly Hills) est un producteur de cinéma américain indépendant.

Biography

Il est né à Brooklyn, à New York.

Il a commencé sa carrière en tant qu'agent littéraire, travaillant pour des clients comme Paddy Chayefsky, Reginald Rose ou Joseph Heller. Il a ensuite obtenu un poste à United Artists, avant de devenir responsable de la distribution dans le monde entier pour le studio.

Il est devenu producteur dans les années 1970 : il a produit seize films, dont quatre en tant que producteur exécutif.

Il met une option sur les droits d'adaptation de Blade Runner au début des années 1970 mais le scénario qu'a rédigé son fils Robert déplaît fortement à Philip K. Dick, l'auteur du livre qui a inspiré le film. Celui-ci raconte que Robert Jaffe était venu le voir pour discuter du projet et que, dès sa descente de l'avion, la première chose que Dick lui avait dite était « est-ce que je te passe à tabac ici à l'aéroport, ou est-ce que je devrais attendre qu'on soit rentré à mon appartement ? ».

Il est mort d'un cancer à Beverly Hills, en Californie. Son fils Steven-Charles Jaffe est également producteur.

Jessie Montgomery (Ally Sheedy) is a spoiled rich girl whose hard partying life style and lack of self-respect as well as a lack of respect for others. When Jessie gets arrested for drunk driving and drug possession, she finally pushes her father Charles (Tom Skerritt) beyond his limits. Beside himself with frustration and disappointment while in the company of Woodrow (Theodore Wilson), he says the one thing he thought he'd never say....he wishes he'd never had a daughter. In pops Stella Winston (Beverly D'Angelo), a fairy godmother that was assigned to the Montgomery family. To keep Jessie from being erased, Stella casts a spell that causes Charles to no longer have a daughter and gets her out of jail. When she goes to her house, her father doesn't recognize her and claims that he has no daughter. Stella then appears and tells her that she's getting what she deserves. She then tells Jessie to find a job and Jessie is then forced to find work as a maid for an eccentric rich couple called The Starkeys (Valerie Perrine and Dick Shawn).

Farmer Vincent Smith and his younger sister Ida live on a farm with a motel attached. It's called “Motel Hello,” but the neon ‘O’ flickers, causing the motel name to appear like Motel Hell. Vincent smokes meats which are said to be the most delicious in the area. The secret is human flesh, and Vincent sets traps on the roads near his motel to catch victims. The victims are restrained, then placed in a 'secret garden,’ buried up to their necks, and have their vocal cords cut to prevent them from screaming. They are kept in the ground and fed until they are ready for harvest. Ida helps Vincent, who feels he does no wrong and sees the victims as animals.

In 1893 London, popular writer Herbert George Wells (Malcolm McDowell) displays a time machine to his skeptical dinner guests. After he explains how it works (including a "non-return key" that keeps the machine at the traveler's destination and a "vaporizing equalizer" that keeps the traveler and machine on equal terms), police constables arrive at the house searching for Jack the Ripper. The film opens in Saigon at the height of the Vietnam War. John Converse (Moriarty), a disillusioned war correspondent, approaches Ray Hicks (Nolte), a merchant marine sailor and acquaintance of Converse's from the US, for help in smuggling a large quantity of heroin from Vietnam to San Francisco, where he will exchange the drugs for payment with Converse's wife Marge (Weld), who has become addicted to Dilaudid. When Hicks discovers he is being followed by thugs connected either to Converse or his suppliers, he goes on the run with Marge and the heroin, and is eventually pursued by the corrupt DEA agent (Zerbe), who initially set the deal in motion. As Marge is separated from her supply of prescription drugs, she experiences withdrawal, and Hicks decides to help her wean off her dilaudid addiction by using the heroin. Hicks also attempts to find another buyer for the heroin before his pursuers can catch up to him.
