Manfred Purzer (born 13 April 1931) is a German screenwriter and film director. He wrote for 27 films between 1955 and 1993. In 1974, he was a member of the jury at the 24th Berlin International Film Festival.

Biography

Après des études de littérature, de psychologie et de philosophie, Purzer vient en 1946 à Die Neue Zeitung. En 1951, il a une bourse d'étude d'Abendzeitung pour aller à la Deutsche Journalistenschule.

En 1952, il devient rédacteur et tourne pour Welt im Bild son premier court métrage documentaire. Un temps, il est producteur exécutif de documentaires pour l'UFA. En 1958, il devient rédacteur en chef et directeur général de Deutsche Wochenschau GmbH à Hambourg.

En 1965, Purzer revient à Munich pour être producteur exécutif de Nora-Film. Il commence à écrire en 1966 puis devient scénariste en 1968 sous le pseudonyme d'Ernst Flügel. Il travaille pour le producteur Luggi Waldleitner, adapte Johannes Mario Simmel et signe beaucoup de films érotiques des années 1970.

Au milieu des années 1970, il devient réalisateur pour l'adaptation de romans. Il met en scène Das Netz de Hans Habe, Les Élixirs du Diable d'Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann et Der Mann im Schilf de George Saiko.

Il fait partie du jury de la Berlinale 1974. De 1974 à 1977, il est président du comité des projets de la Filmförderungsanstalt. En 1987, il crée les Medientage de Munich dont il est directeur jusqu'en 1998.

Autriche, 1934. Après trois années de fouilles archéologiques à Héraklion, le jeune archéologue Robert retourne chez lui à Salzbourg. Ziegenthals (Jürgen Prochnow), a failed student, makes ends meet as an academic ghost writer. By accident he discovers that the respected professor of sociology, Rüdiger Kolczyk (Klaus Schwarzkopf), has plagiarized his doctoral dissertation by translating the work of an American scholar. He decides to blackmail Kolczyk and to ask for 10,000 DM and additional monthly payments of 1,500 DM. Kolczyk initially agrees, but vows to Ziegenhals that "only one of us will survive". Looking for a way to fight back, Kolczyk tries to gather information about Ziegenhals from Miezi (Elke Sommer), a prostitute and a housemate and friend of Ziegenhals. As Miezi has saved enough money she is thinking of leaving her profession. At the same time her violent ex-boyfriend and former pimp, Kalle Prötzel (Claus Theo Gärtner), has been released from prison; he murders her and steals her savings. During the investigations the police finds out that Miezi had an appointment with Kolczyk and discovers the payments Kolczyk makes to Ziegenhals. Being the main suspects in the murder investigation only increases the hatred between Kolczyk and Ziegenhals, who fight with all means available. Kolczyk, learning that Ziegenhals thinks that Kolczyk wants to kill him, starts playing with Ziegenhals' mind. For example, he sends him a package with an alarm clock, making Ziegenhals think that he has received a mail bomb. Ziegenhals meanwhile befriends Kolczyk's daughter Ginny (Kristina Nel) and makes her his lover. Although this forces the both to have to pretend in public that they are friends, the final disaster cannot be averted.

1969. In a Vienna bookshop the Argentine chemist Rafaelo Aranda is poisoned by the bookseller Valerie Steinfeld. The bookseller commits suicide immediately afterwards. It seems the bookseller has never met him before. The chemist's son, Manuel Aranda, wants to find out the background of this murder. He finds out that his father has developed chemical weapons of mass destruction and offered to sell them to the United States, the Soviet Union and France. The Secret Services of these countries try to prevent Aranda from publishing these facts. Aranda survives a first sniper attack without even noticing it.

Paul, surnommé "Männchen", vit avec sa fille, surnommée "Herzblatt", qu'il a recueillie après la mort de sa femme.
