Biography

Michael Luciano débute comme monteur sur The Luck of Roaring Camp d'Irvin Willat (avec Joan Woodbury et Sheila Bromley), sorti en 1937. Suivent quarante-deux autres films américains (ou en coproduction) à ce poste jusqu'en 1987, dont L'Aventurier du Rio Grande de Robert Parrish (1959, avec Robert Mitchum et Julie London) et Les Bleus d'Ivan Reitman (1981, avec Bill Murray et Harold Ramis).

Mais surtout, il collabore avec Robert Aldrich sur vingt de ses réalisations, depuis Alerte à Singapour (1954, avec Dan Duryea et Gene Lockhart) jusqu'à L'Ultimatum des trois mercenaires (1977, avec Burt Lancaster et Richard Widmark), en passant notamment par Les Douze Salopards (1967, avec Lee Marvin et Ernest Borgnine) et Plein la gueule (1974, avec Burt Reynolds et Eddie Albert).

Il est également monteur à la télévision, sur deux téléfilms (1979-1982) et quatorze séries (1952-1985), dont Gunsmoke (six épisodes, 1956-1957) et Ma sorcière bien-aimée (premier épisode, 1964).

Durant sa carrière, Michael Luciano obtient quatre nominations à l'Oscar du meilleur montage (sans en gagner), toutes pour des films de Robert Aldrich, dont Les Douze Salopards précité.

Bo Hooper (Lewis), a clown, finds himself unemployed when the circus where he works suddenly closes. Following mistreatment by agency authorities, Ulzana breaks out of the San Carlos Indian Reservation with a small war party. Soon news reaches the local military commander, who sends riders to alert local homesteads. Both troopers are separately ambushed; one is dragged away while the other shoots the settler woman he is escorting and then himself. The warriors play catch with his heart. The woman's husband, who stayed behind to protect his farm, is captured and tortured to death. Army scout MacIntosh (Lancaster) is given the job of finding Ulzana (Martinez) with a few dozen soldiers led by an inexperienced lieutenant, Garnett DeBuin (Davison). The small cavalry column includes a veteran sergeant (Jaeckel) and Apache scout Ke-Ni-Tay (Luke). Ke-Ni-Tay knows Ulzana, as their wives are sisters.

Frank Towns (James Stewart) is the pilot of a twin-engine Fairchild C-82 Packet cargo plane flying from Jaghbub to Benghazi in Libya. Lew Moran (Richard Attenborough) is the navigator while the passengers are Capt. Harris (Peter Finch) and Sgt. Watson (Ronald Fraser) of the British Army; Dr. Renaud (Christian Marquand), a physician; Heinrich Dorfmann (Hardy Krüger), a German aeronautical engineer; Mr. Standish (Dan Duryea), an oil company accountant; and several oil workers that include Trucker Cobb (Ernest Borgnine), a mentally-disturbed foreman; Ratbags Crow (Ian Bannen), a mean-spirited, sardonic Scot; Carlos (Alex Montoya) and his pet monkey; and Gabriel (Gabriele Tinti). A sudden sandstorm shuts down the engines, forcing Towns to crash-land in the desert. As the aircraft careens to a stop, several oil drums and oil drilling gear break loose and severely injure Gabriel's leg. Two other workers are killed.
