Dans le petit village d'Avechot, en pleine montagne, la veille de Noël, une jeune fille sans histoire, Anna Lou Kastener, disparaît sans laisser de traces. Le commissaire Vogel, un homme très médiatique accro aux caméras qui le suivent partout, est envoyé sur place pour tenter de la retrouver. Entouré d'une meute de journalistes qui surveillent ses faits et gestes, Vogel comprend très vite que la disparition le mène dans une impasse et qu'il sera incapable de la retrouver. Il enquête d'abord dans la famille de l'adolescente, dont les parents sont des membres d'une congrégation religieuse fanatisée, avant de s'intéresser à un jeune homme étrange et solitaire. Mes ces pistes ne mènent à rien. Pour ne pas perdre la face aux yeux du public, Vogel décide de créer son coupable idéal et accuse, grâce à des preuves falsifiées, le plus innocent des habitants du village : un professeur de lycée, Loris Martini, respecté de tous et aussi bon père de famille. La manigance de Vogel fonctionne : après avoir perdu son métier, son honneur et ses proches, Martini est envoyé en prison. Mais de sa cellule, il prépare minutieusement la chute et l'humiliation médiatique de Vogel.

The movie relates the story of Ida Dalser, who fell in love with the future Italian Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini, supported him while he was unemployed in the early 1910s, and married him, presumably around 1914. Two pairs of friends, Matteo and Francesca & Shary and Diego, decide to spend the summer together in a beach house at the foot of Mount Circeo. Matteo, a psychologist, is married to Francesca with whom he has a five-year-old girl, Elena. Diego and Shary have a less stable relationship, having a son together, David, who attends college in the United States. David comes to Italy for the first time in five years to spend time with his family and celebrate his birthday. Upon David's arrival, he and Matteo begin to develop feelings for each other. Only Leonard, Shary's brother, who has returned from his travels around the world to spend some time with the two pairs, seems to sense what is happening. The balance of Matteo's marriage begins to crack, and the growing tension seems to corrode the two families. While the rest of the household is out preparing for David's birthday party, Matteo goes to David's bedroom, and they have sex. When Francesca returns, she has no front-door keys and enters the house through a patio door into David's room where she finds the two men having sex. She runs out, and Matteo runs after her. She dashes around a corner and into the street where she is hit and killed by a car. Later, Matteo, Shary, Diego, and David are having supper. Shary asks Matteo accusingly where he was at the time of the accident, and the movie ends as he begins to cry from guilt.
