Paul Ivano, A.S.C. (1900–1984), was a cinematographer, whose career stretched from 1920 into the late 1960s. He began in 1918 as a photographer with the U.S. Army in his native France. In 1947 he was the cameraman who made the first aerial helicopter shots for an American feature film in Nicholas Ray's film noir They Live by Night.

Biography

Peu après la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale, Paul Ivano émigre aux États-Unis, où il s'installe définitivement. Ainsi, il débute au cinéma à Hollywood, où son premier film (muet) comme chef opérateur est Le Cheik de George Melford, avec Rudolph Valentino et Agnes Ayres, sorti en 1921. En tout, il contribue à environ quatre-vingt-dix films américains à ce poste, le dernier sorti en 1967.

Durant sa carrière, il assiste notamment Erich von Stroheim (ex. : Queen Kelly, film inachevé de 1928, avec Gloria Swanson et Walter Byron), Josef von Sternberg (ex. : Shanghai Gesture en 1941, avec Ona Munson, Victor Mature et Gene Tierney), Julien Duvivier (ex. : L'Imposteur en 1944, avec Jean Gabin et Ellen Drew), ou encore Roy William Neill (ex. : L'Ange noir en 1946, avec Dan Duryea et June Vincent). Il est aussi directeur de la photographie de seconde équipe sur dix-neuf films, dont Ben-Hur (1925) de Fred Niblo et Les Amants de la nuit (1949) de Nicholas Ray.

À la télévision, de 1951 à 1969 (année où il se retire), Paul Ivano dirige les prises de vues sur dix-neuf séries, dont cinquante-sept épisodes (1967-1969) de Cher oncle Bill.

In a forerunner of The Dirty Dozen, Marine Gunnery Sergeant McGrath (Robert Webber) takes 12 Marines from the brig and trains them to blow up a tunnel behind North Korean lines. McGrath's only friend on the patrol is his Korean guide Pak (Dale Ishimoto). Hating their sergeant, the Marines plan to return to their lines without him, seeing that he becomes "a casualty of war". However, en route to their target they find an injured nun (Anna Sten) and a group of Korean convent girls whose bus has been destroyed.

A death row inmate has one final request before his impending hanging: he wants to spend the night with a woman. The police bring him a suicidal prostitute. After a night of lovemaking, the two are married by the prison chaplain. Mary Adams (Cleo Moore) is a waitress in a waterfront bar run by a man who had swindled her father years before.
