Paulene Elenora Myers (November 9, 1913 - December 8, 1996) was an American character and theater actress. She was a pioneer amongst African-American actors who performed on Broadway stage and appeared on many television series throughout her long career. Myers career spanned over six decades.

Biography

Early life and career
Born in Ocilla, Georgia. Myers was the daughter of Zachariah and Annie Bembow Myers, her family relocated to East Orange, New Jersey when she was a child. She studied acting at the New York Theatre School and the Actors Studio West in Beverly Hills, California.

Myers made her Broadway debut in 1933 in"Growin' Pains". She was also featured in Broadway and national companies of major productions like "A Member of the Wedding", "Anna Lucasta" and "The Blacks."


Television roles
Amongst the many roles she played, some of her most notable roles were Mrs. Ward on the NBC-TV daytime soap opera "Days of Our Lives", and Judge Pittman, the star of a TV special, "I'll See You in Court;" Judge Morrisey from the ABC-TV soap General Hospital, and a guest appearance as Judge Mackenzie in an episode of All in the Family titled "Archie's Civil Rights", and Grandma Jane on the CBS-TV variety/comedy series The Tony Orlando & Dawn Show. Myers also appeared with fellow stalwart veteran black actor Richard Ward as Grandpa Evans's new ladyfriend, "Sugarlump" on the CBS-TV sitcom series Good Times, as well as roles on Sanford and Son, The San Pedro Beach Bums, The Cosby Show, The Jeffersons, and Gunsmoke.

While driving through the fictional Beechum County, Alabama, NYU students and friends Billy Gambini (Ralph Macchio) and Stan Rothenstein (Mitchell Whitfield) accidentally shoplift a can of tuna while stopping at a convenience store. After they leave the store, the clerk is shot and killed, and Billy and Stan are arrested in connection with the murder. Due to circumstantial evidence and a confession to shoplifting misconstrued as one to the shooting, Billy is charged with murder, and Stan is charged as an accessory. The pair call Billy's mother, who tells her son that there is an attorney in the family, his cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci). Vincent LaGuardia Gambini travels to Beechum County accompanied by his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei). Although he is willing to take the case, Vinny is a personal injury lawyer from Brooklyn, New York, newly admitted to the bar (after six attempts in six years) with no trial experience.

The film takes place in 1936, at the height of the Great Depression. The film chronicles Twyman's and Stokes's relationship from Stokes's rookie year in the NBA up until his death. Stokes and Twyman were teammates on the Rochester Royals during the 1950s (during which time the team located to Cincinnati). Stokes fell ill three days after the last game of the 1957-58 NBA season, in Minneapolis. Stokes drove to the basket, drew contact and fell to the floor, hit his head, and was knocked unconscious. He was revived with smelling salts, and he returned to the game.

Professional racecar driver Frank Capua (Paul Newman) meets divorcee Elora (Newman's real-life wife Joanne Woodward). After a whirlwind romance they are married. Charley (Richard Thomas), Elora's teenage son by her first husband, becomes very close to Frank, and helps him prepare his cars for his races. But Frank is so dedicated to his career that he neglects his wife, who has an affair with Frank's main rival on the race track, Luther Erding (Robert Wagner). Frank finds them in bed together and storms out. The couple separate, but Frank still sees Charley regularly. Frank's bitterness fuels his dedication to his work, and he becomes a much more aggressive driver. At the Indianapolis 500, Elora and Charley watch while Frank drives the race of his life and wins. After winning, Frank attends a victory party. He is uninterested when attractive women throw themselves at him, and he slips away. Luther finds Frank and apologizes to him for the affair, but Frank punches him. Frank visits Elora and tells her he wants to start again. Elora is unsure.
