Après quelques années passées en captivité durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis en liberté auprès de Gerda en Autriche jusqu'au retour du mari de celle-ci, Fernand Jouvin, restaurateur marseillais rigolard et menteur, revient à Martigues pour retrouver son épouse Christiane. Jules est berger en Provence, qui vit en solitaire sur les hauts plateaux. Pour le sentiment, il s'est arrangé avec une jeune veuve qui habite dans la vallée, Fine, qui vient quelquefois passer la nuit avec lui quand il le désire. Il trouve, un jour au détour d'un sentier, un conteneur d'aviation qu'il prend pour une bombe, lequel, après avoir été percé par les chevrotines de son fusil, laisse apparaître près de deux mètres cubes de billets de banque. Angoissé, ne sachant que faire de tout cet argent, Jules offre aux habitants du village un grand banquet qui attire aussitôt les convoitises et les jalousies de chacun des convives. Après avoir semé le doute puis la terreur avec cet argent, Jules reçoit la visite de deux policiers qui lui expliquent, en raflant les dernières liasses, que ces faux billets étaient en réalité un piège de l'occupant voulant ruiner à la libération l'économie nationale. Le village va pouvoir recommencer une vie sans argent, peut-être plus près de l'amour.

In 1943 Charles Bailly (Fernandel), a French prisoner of war, decides to escape from the farm in Germany where he works and return to France. He travels through the country, accompanied by his cow, Marguerite. On the way they encounter many people, some sympathetic and some not. The key scene involves Fernandel's character encountering a troop of soldiers on a narrow bridge. The cow won;t turn round to allow them to pass easily and they are forced into single file. Fernandel and the cow pas as if inspecting the troops.
