Unni Menon is an Indian film playback singer. He has sung over 3000 songs in South Indian languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. In the early part of his career, he spent many years as a low-profile playback singer. The turning point in his career came when he sang the song "Pudhu Vellai Mazhai" from Mani Ratnam's award winning 1992 Tamil film Roja, composed by A. R. Rahman. He has frequently associated with A. R. Rahman, lending his voice to nearly 25 memorable songs from films like Karuththamma (1994) and Minsaara Kanavu (1997).

Stephen Louis (Jayasurya) is a quadriplegic by birth who is immensely rich, but he believes in celebrating each moment of life. He always loves to see beautiful things and speaks about celebrating life even though he can't move any part of his body other than his neck. He is always assisted by his Manager Kamalu (Nandu) and his caretaker/driver Karunan (Jayan) in a palatial house in Fort Kochi. Rani (Bidushi Dash Barde), the daughter of former Chennai police officer Arokiya Raj (Prakash Raj), tells her father over the phone that she will back home in 20 minutes. As she leaves the telephone booth, she is approached by someone. The screen then cuts to black and we find out that Rani does not come home. The following morning Arokiya Raj finds a finger hanging at his door. Police reports confirm that it is his daughter Rani's finger. He calls Raghavan (Kamal Hassan), his old friend, for investigation. Raghavan handles the case and they eventually find the body of Rani in a forest in the city outskirts. The doctor's report states that the killer bisected Rani’s body with a surgical knife, proving that the murderer has a strong medical background. Following the trauma of losing their only daughter, Arokiya Raj and his wife move to New York.

Karthikeyan (Arjun) is a photographer-cum-editor working in Indian Express. Chitra (Meena) is a bank employee. Both reside in Navi Mumbai. Karthik meets Chitra while opening a bank account. While returning home, Karthik again meets her in a train. He offers his seat but Chitra does not want to accept it. During a train strike he invites her to travel in an auto to reduce expenses, but she declines. When Chitra hesitated to travel in the same train with Karthik, he became angry and explained that he talked to her because both are from same area and he says he will never talk to her anymore. Amar Kant Varma (Shahrukh Khan) is a Program executive for All India Radio. He is dispatched from New Delhi to cover festivities in Northeast India. On his way there, during a rainy night, Amar stops at Haflong train station to catch Baraks Valley express, as the train runs late, Amar meets a mysterious woman by herself who asks him for a cup of tea. When he returns with the tea, he watches her board the next train with three male passengers. Later, Amar spots the same woman in Silchar. He attempts to talk to her but she says she cannot recall meeting him before. The affable Nandu (Sanjay Dutt), a small-time crook who is hired to deliver a mysterious package to a notorious criminal named Pinky (Paresh Rawal). Romeo lives a privileged life as a celebrity with his widowed mother, in Bangalore, India. He receives considerable assistance and encouragement from Raj Mohan to dance and sing. He meets and is attracted to Madhoo, who is also his fan. His mother meets with Madhoo's grandfather and both arrange their wedding. Then Romeo finds out that Raj Mohan has been stealing body organs, especially kidneys, from patients in the Satya Moorthy Hospital, and then getting them killed via bus accidents. He meets with Raj and warns him that he is going to expose him publicly. Before he could reveal their actibities Romeo is shot, taken and thrown off of a cliff. His friend, Prakash, takes the blame; he is arrested, tried in Court, found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
