1980, in a rural village in the Lyon region, Saint-Julien-sur-Bibost Joseph Poacher says "Jojo" and his wife Lucienne called "Lulu", nagging shrew and inveterate alcoholic, lead a married life for the less confrontational, in their farm located in a place called "Paradise". One day, Jojo watches on TV a story about a brilliant lawyer who is in his twenty-fifth acquittal. Very impressed, Jojo will find it. He tells her he killed his wife while he has not yet done so, by a set of very clever questions, is explaining how he would have had to make to be pretty sure to get the extenuating circumstances. Jojo in then returns to "Paradise" and begins to organize, as directed by the lawyer, the staging of the "perfect crime".

Alors qu'il lui reste un an de détention à tirer, Stéphane Carella, casseur notoire, doit être transféré dans une autre prison dans un fourgon de gendarmerie dont le trajet passe dans les gorges du Verdon. Mais les gendarmes viennent en aide à des collègues, dont le véhicule vient d'avoir un léger accident, les obligeant à menotter Carella avec un certain Paul Brandon, individu apparemment violent et dangereux. C'est alors que Brandon neutralise un gendarme et s'évade en compagnie de Carella, avec lequel il est toujours menotté. Après avoir escaladé des falaises et plongé dans un torrent pour échapper à leurs poursuivants, les deux hommes réussissent à échapper aux policiers et trouvent refuge dans une maison isolée où vit Laura. La jeune femme, employée dans un parc d'attractions, les aide volontiers, car son mari a été tué un an auparavant par les forces de l'ordre. Cette dernière tombe sous le charme des deux hommes.

Héléna Bourdelle, called "The Bourdelle," is a great singer and wife of maestro André Bourdelle. Joining the Resistance, he is killed by the accidental explosion of a grenade. Following the defeat, the family's mansion is taken over by German forces, leaving the family occupying a few back rooms, complaining to the Kommandantur about his excesses and those of his men. Bourdelle, her daughters and their tenant help by chance an English soldier to escape and are then forced to hide him. The family, whose former caretaker Ramirez has become a Gestapo agent, is favoured by the General Spontz who has a soft spot for Bernadette Bourdelle. He is willing to ignore the fact that Guy-Hubert, son of the family, a seemingly cowardly and effeminate hairdresser, is actually the elusive vigilante known as "Super-Resistant".
