The Cinema Guild Inc. was established by Philip and Mary-Ann Hobel, producers known for their work in documentaries and features, including the film Tender Mercies.
Since 1968, the Cinema Guild has been a distributor of both documentary and fiction films (narrative features and shorts), offering distribution in all markets, including educational, non-theatrical, theatrical, television, cable, internet, and home video.
The Cinema Guild launched its own home video brand in March 2009. The company released its first Blu-ray, Marwencol in 2011.
Internationally acclaimed filmmakers who have released films through The Cinema Guild include Claire Denis, Jacques Rivette, Agnès Varda, Pedro Costa, Béla Tarr, Hong Sang-soo, Alexander Sokurov, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
The distributor has also worked with such U.S.-based independent filmmakers as Andrew Bujalski, Jem Cohen, and Matthew Porterfield.

"In Turin on 3rd January, 1889, Friedrich Nietzsche steps out of the doorway of number six, Via Carlo Alberto. Not far from him, the driver of a hansom cab is having trouble with a stubborn horse. Despite all his urging, the horse refuses to move, whereupon the driver loses his patience and takes his whip to it. Nietzsche comes up to the throng and puts an end to the brutal scene, throwing his arms around the horse’s neck, sobbing. His landlord takes him home, he lies motionless and silent for two days on a divan until he mutters the obligatory last words, 'Mutter, ich bin dumm!' ['Mother, I am stupid!' in German] and lives for another ten years, silent and demented, cared for by his mother and sisters. We do not know what happened to the horse.

Through the night, three cars carry a small group of men – police officers, a doctor, a prosecutor, grave diggers, gendarmerie forces, and two brothers, homicide suspects – around in the rural surroundings of the Anatolian town Keskin, in search of a buried body. Kenan, one of the suspects, leads them from one water fountain to another; at the time of the crime he was drunk and he cannot recall where he and his mentally challenged brother buried the body. The darkness and visual indistinctness of the landscape do not help; each spot looks the same as the others.

On April 8, 2000, Mark Hogancamp was attacked outside of a bar by five men who beat him nearly to death. After nine days in a coma and forty days in the hospital, Mark was discharged with brain damage that left him little memory of his previous life. Unable to afford therapy, Mark creates his own by building a 1/6-scale World War II-era Belgian town in his yard and populating it with dolls representing himself, his friends, and even his attackers. He calls that town "Marwencol," a portmanteau of the names "Mark," "Wendy" and "Colleen." He rehabilitates his physical wounds by manipulating the small dolls and props — and his mental ones by having the figures act out various battles and stories.
